General Electric F414 and Eurojet EJ200 Under Consideration to Replace GTX-35 Engine on the Tejas LCA

08:52 GMT, April 28, 2010 NEWTOWN, Conn. | The GTX-35 appears to be on the verge of cancellation, and might be replaced by another engine on the Tejas fighter (Light Combat Aircraft). After a development program lasting over 20 years without producing a successful engine, the GTX-35 may, instead of powering an aircraft, find itself supplying power on Indian Navy vessels. In early 2008, India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) had teamed with Snecma to help complete development of the Kaveri for the LCA program.

GE provided its F404-GE-IN20 engine for LCA prototypes and the initial series-production aircraft. Flight testing showed the F404 had insufficient thrust and didn't meet the design specifications, so the search for a higher thrust engine began. Two potential candidates are being considered: GE's F414 and Eurojet's EJ200. The commonality between the F404 and F414 leads us to believe it has the upper hand, as it would minimize the program delay. India's air force reportedly needs 88 Tejas fighters to be in service by 2017 to replace the large number of MiG-21s being retired. The IAF schedule calls for the Tejas to reach IOC by the end of 2010 and full capability by 2012. Needless to say, switching engines so late in the program will complicate matters and make meeting the Air Force's deployment schedule a challenge.

Forecast International expects the LCA will ultimately fly with either the F414 or EJ200.

.
C'mon the LCA is already flying the GE 404 and the GE 414's dimensions are the same as GE 404...so no need to worry.

.
This is known to all now and GE414 is to power LCA... Why do we need one more thread on this?

. .
A puppet doesn't need a warplane as when it requires permission from daddy(USA) to cross border during Kargil war.

Be it Sukhoi or LCA, they will never be used other than in Aero-India shows for saving some pride.

distorted facts once again.

first 40 Tejas mk-1 was decided to use the GE-404 IN already purchased.

only Tejas mk-2 from 2015 onwards will use another engine. this will either be the EJ-2000 or the GE-414 .

Kaveri mk-II will take over when its ready

the Kaveri Mk-1 may replace the engine on the Tejas Mk1 eventually but as far as the Tejas program goes its missed its chance

Kaveri cancellation ? , i will admit the record has not been spectacular but get real.

These include the General Electric F404 used to power the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, Snecma's M88-2 for the Dassault Rafale and Volvo Aero's RM12, integrated with the Saab Gripen. Its search even contains the Gas Turbine Research Establishment GTX-35VS Kaveri, still in development for India's Aeronautical Development Agency Tejas light combat aircraft.

The Kaveri engine, meant for India's fighter jet, the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, has completed all simulation and altitude tests. The altitude tests in Russia in February were a "grand success", he said.

MACHINIST - DRDO launches Gas Turbine Enabling Technology Initiative [GATET] at GTRE

The Aeronautics Research & Development Board (AR&DB) of DRDO has taken a new initiative called "coherent directed research" in the area of gas turbines. This program called “GATET” envisages about Rs 100 Cr investment in 3 years and participation of 100 R&D centres and 1000 Scientists, engineers and technicians.

GTRE, Bangalore will function as the nodal laboratory for this program. It is intended to fill the technology gaps and develop human resources in military engine development.
Rs 78 crore has already been sanctioned for this initiative and some projects have already been shortlisted. R&D projects which require investment of Rs 50 lakh to Rs 5 crore would be considered for funding and 40 to 45 of these projects are expected to be funded.

Author is a retard??

the author himself says that the prototypes ful using GE F404 and not GTX-35,but it is under development.

so how come the programme be delayed when GOI has already accepted that LCA is not gonna fly using kaveri and there after they estimated the IOC,kaveri or No kaveri LCA programme will not be effected although no one can gurantee some other problems..

That helped a lot .. good post !

Engine development is a continuous process. LCA configuration is already more or less fixed. Trials going on in full steam.

Kaveri can continue development and will be useful in MCA.

The naval engine was just the spin off, so word "instead" does not fit at all.

This is hardly a news.
