Growing intolerance? What a bunch of old frauds these ‘intellectuals’ have proved to be

. . . . . .
Good to see people getting sick of this award wapasi tamasha. This should stop anyway after Bihar elections.

One thing this whole "liberal" class fails to understand is that attacking Modi makes him stronger. He will use all these abuses thrown by "liberal" on him and gain sympathy votes. Just look at the crowd he pulls when he addresses rallies in Bihar. Even people voting for Nitish in this election swear by Modi as their PM. Same is going to get repeated in UP, Haryana, Maharashtra, MP, Rajasthan, Chhatisgarh etc..

A chaiwala comment made by such a "liberal" was milked to create a wave. How do you think will same people who voted him in 2014 respond when they see him called even worse names ? Do these award wapasi crusaders really think that people in hinterland give a cr@p about FOE ? Accuse him falsely and see your own bastions broken. He loves to fight and rejoices this. Keep attacking him and witness one state after other falling to BJP. Assam is almost gone. Other states of NE will follow.

i have always advocated for a direct-democracy ( true democracy ) where there are no parties ( because divide people ) and where the people can decide on neighborhood issues, country issues and global issues by gathering into neighborhood-level congresses and having their secretariats deliver enlightened ideas and decisions to the city-level secretariat and country-level secretariat.

such a system can only be brought through revolutionary change arranged by progressives/socialists/true-intellectuals.

one movement that has a similar idea is "aam aadmi party" with its "swaraj" ideal.

Your precious 'progressives/socialists' are in the pockets of Congress. Their loyalty lies first to Sonia Gandhi and to the people of India second.

True-intellectuals don't exist in this country. They have all either fled or have been labelled as communalizers for their simple belief in things such as abolishing the separate Muslim civilian code or the end of reservations. Because anything that might hurt vote-bank politics = Communalism.

Instead it is time to stop believing in some silly fantasy and start embracing pragmatic, and growth-focused, governance. The only part that is offering that now is BJP.

cut the bullshit, please.

you don't realize it yet but a real "uniform civil code" is going to bring more changes to hindu society than muslim society ( because you don't know true islami laws as against the mullah crap ), and will cause sanghis to jump up and down every day. :enjoy:

as for "growth focused governance", why don't you get bjp to grow farmer suicides to zero within one month?? or does growth only mean bigger salary for cricketers, more private banks, more "make in india" foreign-origin military equipment factories, more rupees into accounts of useless capitalist fools like mukesh ambani and more dog-friendly restaurants in bangalore??

Please. You sound like a child. Read the original court case. I don't care what the Qu'ran says. Muslims need to pay alimony to their divorced wives and children just like everyone else. Your 'sanghis' are the ones pushing for a uniform civilian code, while the Wafq Boards are most opposed.

If you feel so strongly about the farmer issues, I am curious as to what you are doing about it, instead of using their suicides as some kind of political tool. As for BJP they are planning to construct a number of national waterways that will increase irrigation and provide water even during times of draught to farmers. This would prevent bad harvest seasons, stop unnecessary shark loans, and increase savings for farmers. It is a much better long term plan than any of your 'progressives' have ever come up with after 60 years for alleviating farmer issues.

It took Congress 30 years just to build 5, in comparison.

In more than 40 years in journalism, never have I seen such an explosion of free speech in India. The Prime Minister has been called a fascist, he has been charged with being complicit in the murder of Mohammad Akhlaq, he has been reviled by his political opponents and each word said has been given full and faithful coverage in the media. Only last week I was at a gathering in Mumbai where Raj Thackeray mocked him for travelling so often abroad that a sequel to Bajrangi Bhaijaan was being planned, for Salman Khan to bring him back to India. This was reported in the newspapers without anyone caring to mention the new directions in foreign policy. Or Narendra Modi’s efforts to revive foreign investment in the moribund economy he inherited.

Yet the writers, historians, filmmakers, artistes and scientists who have joined the award-returning protest say that they are protesting because they believe that freedom of expression is under threat. What a bunch of old frauds these ‘intellectuals’ have proved to be. Even as someone who predicted long before Narendra Modi became prime minister that something like this would happen, the extent of the fraudulence has surprised me. Not one of the men and women who have joined the protest have given a single example of books being banned or films being stopped, and yet they have whipped up such hysteria in the media that in the eyes of the world, India is today as awful a country as Iran.

Speaking of Iran, did you hear one of our conscientious intellectuals raise their voices for the poets Fatemeh Ekhtesari and Mehdi Mousavi who have been sentenced to receiving 99 lashes each for shaking hands with people of the opposite sex? No, you would not have. The Indian intellectual is a creature of selective outrage, so we did not hear voices raised either when Professor T J Joseph’s hand was chopped off by jihadists of Kerala’s Popular Front of India. He offended this Islamist military outfit because in their dreadful version of Islam, he had blasphemed their Prophet. Professor Joseph’s Islamic punishment did not make national headlines and was quickly forgotten because we in the media are as proudly ‘liberal’ as the award-returning intellectuals. So when was the last time you read a serious article on the ethnic cleansing of Pandits from the Kashmir valley?

The truth is that us ‘liberal’ types are really the most illiberal people you will ever meet. We cannot accept a narrative that differs from the narrative that we believe is the right one and Narendra Modi in our narrative has always been a villain.
And must remain a villain even if this means turning democracy on its head. If a recent Pew poll reveals that Modi still has an 87 per cent approval rating, then the pollsters must be fascists or the people must be wrong. It might interest you to know that many of the protesting writers, filmmakers and historians have opposed Modi long before he became prime minister. Some openly campaigned against him during the 2014 general election and cannot accept that the people chose to give him a full mandate. Many lurked about in the corridors of fine hotels in Banaras hoping to influence voters to reject Modi and embrace Arvind Kejriwal.

As someone who was also lurking about in the corridors of fine hotels in Banaras, I ran into some of these ‘intellectuals’ and tried explaining that in their ivory tower they were missing the mood of the people. Nobody listened. They did not want to because their purpose was clear. It was to convince foreign correspondents of their view, and they succeeded brilliantly. So most influential foreign newspapers reduced the story of the most remarkable general election India has seen in decades to a dull tale of imaginary Hindu-Muslim tensions.

It was as if along with our intellectuals they were waiting for something like the murder of Mohammad Akhlaq to happen. When it did, the foreign press used it to once more paint India as a country that was really not much better than the Islamic republic next door.

So totally have the protesting intellectuals occupied the public square in recent weeks that not even General Pervez Musharraf admitting that Hafiz Saeed and Osama bin Laden were Pakistani heroes got the attention it should have. They will continue to dominate the public square till the elections in Bihar are over in the forlorn hope of changing the mind of voters. Then they will disappear into obscurity till the next important election happens when they will undoubtedly find some new issue to make a racket about. The sad truth is that our public intellectuals have always acted as a fifth column of the Congress party for reasons of ‘secularism’, and this is now more obvious than it has ever been.

you want 400 million to dictate for the remaining 900 million??

or 800 million to dictate for the remaining 500 million??

or the reactionaries, their apologists and the fence-sitting cowards to silence the progressives??

:undecided:

No one should dictate . We are a Free society ( not fully free  ) Its survival of the fittest . Some of them will be left behind while some will move on the path of development .

At best we , The Common People can prove those reactionaries , Apologists and Fence sitters WRONG .

You are behaving exactly like how right wingers generally behave these days. Before any counter argument, paste a motive. Yes she might be very close to BJP, but it is better to post a counter argument than pointing out her close allegiance to BJP. What she is saying is always more important than who she is.
I have followed her long enough to know what her motives are, I already saw a televised debate between her on one side and writers on other(its on ndtv you can watch it). I am just saving my time.

I have no issue of her being a right wing journalist, just that what she is saying is on expected lines.

this tavleen singh crackpot female, does she ( having had a affair with the pakistani muslim, salman taseer ) run away when her fellow sanghis release terror statements against "love jihad" and how all "dharmics" must protect their sister and cousin from the evil miyan's??

is she another of those socialites ( not socialists - for some members ) who attends parties attended by all the fakers and suwwars more concerned about how some female is not 40 kg weight ( oh, dahling, the scandal !! ) rather than indulge in the "boring and anti-national" commie talk of how in maharashtra, foeticided female "biological remains" ( dead bodies ) are being fed to "man's best friend" dogs??
I think there is better way to put thoughts into words and sentences. :flame:

Please read her other columns first before you judge and sentence her in such a facile way. Time and time again she has come out against conservative views on social matters. She berates those who go around trying to disallow women from drinking, or eating what they want. She herself is in a long term live-in-partnership, that is how socially conservative she is. Time and time again she has written articles critical of the current government.

Forgive me for being blunt, but the problem with you bleeding heart liberals is that you simply cannot see nuance or shades in other opinions or views. If Tavleen Singh believes that Modi has been unfairly targeted in this writers award campaign then of course she must also believe in caste, dowry, female subservience, she is a chaddi, an unthinking uneducated animal filled with visceral hatred and superstitions.

Please disabuse yourself of that notion, right wing comes in shades as does left wing. There are plenty of socially liberal, fiscally conservative voters in India. Tavleen Singh believes that socialism has kept India in poverty. She is Sikh herself with a Half muslim son who had a Christian fiancé. She is not against anyone's religion. Read her articles on the problems of villages in India, she is one of the few journalist who actually visit remote corners of India unlike the lefty Lutyens brigade. She is one of the few journalists who takes the trouble to collect data from primary sources.
sorry, too late mate. I have already put her inside a saffron box. :)
I have nothing to say about her personal life, I solely rely on her on her performance in tv debates, where she comes off as a rich-socialite-with-lots-of-opinion-on-stuffs ... I wil choose to save my time. Thank you.

a post i made yesterday will i think suit your points ( Raghuram Rajan, Narayan Murthy Add Voice Against Rising Intolerance | Page 12 ).

I don't care what the Qu'ran says.

you should, because the justice for the wife that western/modern-socialist systems brought in recent history ( and contributed to indian civil law thus ) comprised the real part of islam fourteen centuries ago... so indian muslims taking up ucc will really be them going back to true islam, rather than the south asian corrupted version they follow now.

Muslims need to pay alimony to their divorced wives and children just like everyone else.

read about "mahr" and divorce in islam.

Your 'sanghis' are the ones pushing for a uniform civilian code

as i said, the sanghis will be jumping soon once a real and progressive ucc is established. :)

pointless.

If you feel so strongly about the farmer issues, I am curious as to what you are doing about it

preparing to dig canals by hand.

instead of using their suicides as some kind of political tool.

and why not??

all that modi government has done since inauguration last year is becoming a tout for western weapons manufacturers and useless capitalist companies.

As for BJP they are planning to construct a number of national waterways that will increase irrigation and provide water even during times of draught to farmers.

search: cabinet-nod-plan-convert-101-rivers-national-waterways-2173455.html

1. the article doesn't mention irrigation.

2. like many programs and government structures, this one was a congress-time program which bjp would have renamed to some sanskrit phrase suggested by rss... example, "planning commission" to "niti aayog".

besides, how about places like rajasthan ( state of late farmer gajendra singh )??

This would prevent bad harvest seasons, stop unnecessary shark loans, and increase savings for farmers. It is a much better long term plan than any of your 'progressives' have ever come up with after 60 years for alleviating farmer issues.

the solution is partly technological ( building a scientific irrigation system ), partly economic, partly social... and that can only be ensured through progressive/socialist means... no other choice.

1. read up on the libyan "great man made river" project ( the biggest water transport system in history ).

2. my post on this topic from yesterday ( India becomes world's 7th MOST VALUED 'Nation Brand' | Page 5 )... it's a long post but will answer your post.

I think there is better way to put thoughts into words and sentences. :flame:

how so??
