Gripen E flyaway is $85 Mn with no weapons commanality with Indian stores. Thus we have to add another $25 Mn for weapons load and you get a figure of $110 Mn weapons loaded..

If we compare the whole package price with the training+spares+bases+skill development in sweden+transfer costing like the supplementary package for Rafale, the ballpark figure is $220 Mn +/-10%

So this is a visible media campaign run by Saab.

Inspite of running a very visible PR campaign, the price of Gripen E and the whole package it has in terms of timeline for planning is still not fully attractive.

I am sure these companies dont yet understand that DM MP is a very shrewd negotiator and he will squeeze them for a much better deal.. He will make Saab, Boeing and LM fight out among themselves and when a good deal will come, he will then squeeze the french side to match or better it..

All can read the above deal details and understand ... The scope of tech transfer or R&D funding into Indian industry is zero. DM MP observation's were spot on..

typhoons are of for them. the current variant they want is going cheaper to increase competitiveness in the high end jet market.
the newer 3b's are £100+ million

As of now US or Saab wont get into our air force or navy.. The decision if at all is taken will be Jan-mar 2017 timeline.

On that also many geo political considerations are there with what can be best possible outcome for our industry.

US would always offer us a licence production of Ge414 from Pune plant without we insisting on complete technology understanding and liberal usage.

Saab otoh is talking about a structure which we already have it for our ecosystem where HAL has to change into an integrator role or a main assembler role and the whole MIC forms the components and sub assemblies. That expertise which Saab wishes to share with us is meaningless as its re inventing the wheel only.

Money crunch is a smaller issue as its spread over decades. Its basically what we really want. The first is the point that how long will it take for Mk1A to come in and fill the required numbers. IN case say for next 10 years visibility is clear that X number of MK1A comes to IAF and we still require more than can we wait for it or do we require an additional aircraft line.

In our case MK2 plan, indigenous LSA, F16, Gripen E all are vying for such a prospective scenario. But in case the engine help from Safran, if its really there and if Kaveri is delivered than right from Mk1A, Mk2/LSA, AMCA to even future Rafales can be powered by 1 engine family which is our own and completely sanction free..

So i see a good focus on LCA Mk1A first and mass producing it. Of course FOC now will be in March 2017 i guess as Dec 2016 looks difficult. So a lot of proper project management is needed to increase the numbers of Tejas..

Fighter radar: Saab eyes tech transfer under Make in India

Swedish aerospace and defence major Saab Group is planning to introduce its latest fighter radar in India. It is also ready to offer full technology transfer under the Make in India programme.

“Saab as a radar supplier will offer and transfer the highest technology level for the fighter jets,” said Lars Tossman, Vice-President and Head of business unit Airborne Surveillance, Saab.

Saab, which manufactures the Gripen fighter jet, is willing to co-produce the latest Gallium Nitride AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar with the Indian defence firms, Tossman added.

“The idea is to complement the Indian industry with experience as a fighter radar system and create future possibilities for Indian industry together with Saab.”

Earlier this year, Saab held a series of meeting with top officials from the Defence Ministry and Air Force to jointly develop the technology in India if the Centre approves the production of Gripen in the country under Make in India. Saab is the first company to develop and deploy Gallium Nitride AESA radars in various forms. It has received orders from other fighter programmes around the world for its GaN AESA technology.

Saab has offered this programme to India also under the Tejas LCA programme. However, the MoD is yet to respond on the offer, Tossman added.

GaN is a semi-conductive material currently under intensive development. Areas of use include LED-lights and Blu-ray components, and now it is also being incorporated into microwave applications in the military industry.

This cutting-edge technology is already included in the new members of Saab’s extended surface radar family, which were launched in 2014.

GaN gives higher power efficiently, higher output power and is a more robust material for chip design. This allows an extended range through higher output and higher reliability

In the airborne surveillance, Saab is already engaged with the Indian Dhruv programme for full spectrum Integrated Self Protection System. The deliveries of this had been going on since 2012. Under this programme, Saab is fully supporting technology transfers in maintenance and production.

Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, who is on five-day tour of Sweden, was flown in a Gripen fighter plane on Thursday at the SAAB facility in Linkoping. He flew a Gripen D aircraft with Wing Commander (Flying) Michael Lundquist.

The IAF chief arrived in Sweden to hold bilateral talks on defence and aerospace cooperation, which was initiated by PM Modi and his Swedish counterpart during the ‘Make in India’ summit.

Sweden and SAAB had offered the Gripen for production under the ‘Make in India’ programme held in Mumbai last February. Both the nations ratified the deal during the ‘Shangri La Dialogue’ in Singapore on June 3. The agreement included the production of Gripen multi-role fighter aircraft in India and establishing a long-term relationship for future programmes including comprehensive transfer of technology and joint development of futuristic fighters (AMCA).
