Greece entered Euro by cooking its finance books by hiding its high debt. Greeks are now well known as fraudsters and con artists that are sucking money from European Union. It is better for Europe and also Greece that Greece exits Euro and resurrect Drachma.

In the mid 90s the then German finance minister had clearly said to the Greek finance minister that you are not joining the EURO because you don't fulfill the prerequisites. The Greeks cooked up their finance books and a London based company helped them manipulate their numbers. France also wanted Greece to join EURO so that controlling the Germans would be a bit easier for them. The French were the biggest proponent of the EURO anyway as they hated the Bundesbank and could go to any length to strip it of its power.

BBC News - Greece debt repayment in full is 'unrealistic', says Syriza

EU leaders have warned the new Greek government that it must live up to its commitments to the creditors.

Meanwhile, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker warned that Greece cannot expect any reduction of its debt commitments.

He said it "is not on the radar" of the commission.

German government spokesman Steffan Seibert stressed it was important for Greece to "take measures so that the economic recovery continues".

Jeroen Dijsselbloem, president of the Eurogroup, said on Monday: "There is very little support for a write-off in Europe."

Syriza's victory has caused some concern in the financial markets.

In a volatile start to the week the euro briefly touched an 11-year low against the dollar early on Monday, before recovering to trade almost 0.7% higher against the US currency.

Expect this tit for tat between the lenders and Greece to continue for a very very long time to come. Even the Euro has weakened amidst uncertainty and speculation.

The Greeks in general do work very hard. The whole thing about Greeks being lazy moochers is a stereotype that only applies to certain parts of the public sector that have control of the country (ex. government bureaucrats, unions in essential economic sectors).

The problem with those austerity policies is that it cuts all the essential stuff like hospital care, law enforcement, education or infrastructure maintenance, while the high level bureaucrats and connected businessmen are still giving themselves raises and dodging taxes behind the scene.

The small minority of Greeks that are the laziest had manipulated the system to give themselves immunity while the people who worked hard and never gamed the system take the fall. The EU can force Greece to cut their budget but does not have the power to tell the country what to cut...

I've encountered newly emigrated upper middle class Greek-Canadians, and while they do work very hard, I've noticed a lot of them still want to do the "pay cash, no sales tax" scheme common in corrupt countries. I would have to remind them that they are in Canada where people pay taxes that are due. Thankfully they do seem embarrassed getting called out.

On the other hand, Greeks on work visas pay their taxes like their lives depend on it. The attitude between richer Greek and poorer Greek couldn't be more different.

I think Germany and the EU would achieve better results forcing Greece into default and then give the poor Greeks humanitarian supports afterward, and keep the money away from the grubby hands of corrupt Greek politicians. I have a feeling the EU doesn't want to because they want to bailout their own banks though...
