Greece and Turkey: Offensive and Defensive Balance of Air Power in 2012

Today, the Greek and Turkish air forces are considered to be among the best-trained and best-equipped in the world, along with (or after) those of the US, UK, Russia, Israel, France, China, India, Australia and South Korea.

This line is conflict, it doesn't make sense. No Pakistan?

China, India, Australia, S.Korea best trained/best equipped? No, they are just average trained/average equipped.

If you look at the economical outlook (= military outlook) of both countries, it's pretty clear that Turkey will be become much, much stronger compared to Greece. Greece's GDP for 2011 was -7%~ and it could be even worser in the time to come.

Probably if Greece sorted out its mess with Turkey it would be a more prosperous nation, I find that Greek music and food is some what similar to Turkey's perhaps due to close proximity to Turkey and also since Greece was part of Ottoman Empire for good time

With current economic woes 40-55 % of the planes in Greek airforce could probbly become unoperational in 2-3 year time frame or the performance of the force would be low

contrary to your belief, Greeks are taught well of history. Greeks do accept that they were a prominent part of the ottoman empire and near east's shining cities were mostly Greek traders and business men who actually thought that instead of a revolution the right way was to rule the ottoman empire from the inside.

However you have to realise that every nation on this planet has the right to self determination. and Greeks decided they wanted to have their own country with their own name on their forefathers land.
this is something that GDPs and who would have been better off or what do not explain.

I am sorry sometimes turks can't see past ottoman things and focus on what is there today.

I think even if somehow Greece recovers miraculously, it will go for Russian aerial hardware now. In recent years, Russia has opened more to Western Europe for small time JVs on specific advanced components (especially with France since Russia and France have been historically pretty friendly).

The Su-35BMs would be some serious game changer if Greeks could afford it.

Needless to say that Turkey is too strong right now and if Greece needs to maintain the balance, it has to recover from this crisis and fast.

There's more to it than just commonalities and modern enmity. Please remember that this enmity is very old. It boils down from the dying times of the Greek empire to the rise of Ottoman empire during those days. The animosity is just same albeit in modern package.

The Greeks have relatively modern air force with F-16s and Mirage 2000s that would run find for another decade with minor modifications and upgrades.

That, my friend, is Beijing's philosophy. Trade is not the answer to everything. The only way to solve this is for Greeks and Turks to sit together and seriously engage each other in what give-and-takes they both can make so that both are satisfied and the 800 year old enmity subsides.

I really don't understand why you keep blaming US for everything that is going on around the world. In fact, without US uniting both Greece and Turkey in CW era, they both would have bombed each other 5 times and over. So just keep Unkil Sam out of this mate. Cyprus is not a Greek or a Turkish island. It is a sovereign country along the lines of:

- Switzerland: having French, German, Italian and Romanish ethnicities.
- Singapore: having Malay, Chinese and Indian ethnicities.

etc.

It just happens that Cypriots happen to be ethnically both Greek and Turkish. But that doesn't mean that Cyprus is owned by either country just like Germany doesn't own Switzerland or we or the Chinese don't own Singapore.

Upgrade of 175 Block-40/50s to Block-50+ standards via CCIP project has already started and first upgraded F-16s are delivered to TuAF. yes, and the article is a bit old. So the CCIP was a bit away when written. Greece has upgrades on the works too. Signed and paid for.
