Good for your reply and confirming my statement @32

It depends on which western counterpart

Even with our large droves of our talented students going overseas helping western universities gaining reputation, we are still strong to very strong in our own rights. :yay::victory1:

Taiwan University is at 17th.

Self-hated Chinese!

Thanks to Mao Zedong the foreign worshiper anyway!
see, you are a self-hated chinese,

thanks for good news you giving.

Shanghai Ranking didn't put Chinese uni in the top 20 of their list.

Why?

Indian success in US is real.

As India itself, economically is a country of IT and high tech.

Ah, wait a minute!!!

Nanyang University is way ahead than National University of Singapore(NUS).

THIS LIST IS BULLSHIT!!!

Shanghai ranking? never heard about that, could you link anything?

In engineering

Anyway it doesn't really matter which Uni is top. If you are lucky enough to get a place in any of the top 100 unis, you're guaranteed a job anywhere in the world, which is the point of going to a uni.

Question for users: Which degree will have the most jobs from: Maths, Physics or Engineering?

and which type of engineering?

None of the above. Correct answers include finance, accounting, software.

The point of going to university is to have fun while learning and *getting to know people*. Getting a better job is a side effect. At least that's what I went to university for. Why should I have to live to work? Work is a part of life, it doesn't define me.

You can't fake Nature, Science publications. Also, Indians are far more likely to fake data in scientific publications than Chinese are, among the worst in the world.

A good undergrad education program does not mean a good school - undergrad is just taking classes (with professors that have mandates to give a certain average) and doing structured projects that already have answers. You can filter out the bad by entrance exams. Graduate school is a whole different animal, where everything is 100x harder, the professor won't bat an eye at giving multiple F's and the projects not only have no given answers, the answer may not even exist. Graduate school is what determines the ranking of an institution.

i haven't heard even one chinese university in that list ever.

This:

I think what the comment above has said is perhaps based on something like this ranking by a Chinese institution

Academic Ranking of World Universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences - 2012| 2012 Top 100 Universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences |ARWU-FIELD 2012

where the top 20 was indeed dominated by US colleges :-)

I am not too crazy about notches in "top rankings" even within say top 100 as there are subjective criteria involved :cheesy:

Indians speak English and would always like to boast about India in the west
In reality, few Indians found influential IT companies in the world, while ethnic Chinese found Youtube, Yahoo, Nvidia, Netgear, Atheros, Applied material blabla

Engineering ranking ought to be what spatial IQ ranking all about.

The East Asians have world's highest avg spatial IQ, far higher than Ashkenazi Jews (who mainly depends on stronger verbal IQ).

Everything else being equal in a reasonablely ideal world, the share of the world's top 10 engneering schools ought to be like:

- at least 5 out of mainland China: it is after all the world's single largest pool of the highest spatial IQers.

- 1 out of Japan: the size of its population is big enough to sustain its share at the top table.

(In comparison, S Korean population is too small though)

So 6 in total from Sino-sphere.

- 2 out of Anglo-American world: e,g, MIT, Caltec/Cambridge alike.

- 2 out of Germanic world: ranging from Germany, Austria, Switzerland + northern Italy, to Netherlands and Southern Belgian.

Overall university ranking is entirely another animal though. A considerable part of the top 10 ranking is about soft power underlied by geopolitical, economical and eventually military power in essense. Today's Anglo-American world order ensures that most of the top 10 unis being, errr... being Anglo-American by default. Just like that, simples!

Don't forget tech super heavyweight Applied Materials as well, also found by ethnic Chinese.
