Gravitas: Could Bangladesh be the next to fall into China's trap?

. . . . .
The video says the cost of building the submarine base is a staggering $10 billion US. BD's total outstanding debt is $55 billion a thread says it. So, this $10 billion plus Russian %18 billion will result in a total $83 billion within a few years.

Can someone say this is not a recipe for a debt trap?

Bangladesh will do what it see fit for it's national defence. There are certain red lines which even India's 'unconditional friend' Sheikh Hasina can not cross. Defence is one such area. Even after 12 years of Awami League rule, India did not able to sale a single bullet to Bangladesh army, but China remain the largest source of our arms import and strategic defence partner despite India's much displeasure. It will remain so in future, no matter how much India try to prevent it.
Lol strategic defence partner? That's why China dumped Bangladesh and took Myanmar's side during the Rohingya crisis.

China being strategic partner of Bangladesh is a big joke.

Of course! The way gov. is taking & spending debt money isn't sustainable. It will bite them back sooner or later.

But problem with this sanghi lady crying is elsewhere. She isn't bothered by BD gov. taking debt to spend on useless nuke powerplants, she is just allergic about BD gov. taking out debt from China.

For a third world country without oil money, that is the only way to fund major infrastructure projects. Bangladesh's debt-to-GDP ratio is not unreasonable.
It become's a "trap" when you go crazy and say build a debt nearly equal to GDP.

I find it very regrettable that the global community particularly China let India to gobble up Sikkim that easily as let as in 1975 ! No UN resolution, No condemnation, , no denunciation from anybody. China could have play a very active role to challenge Indian blatant aggression against a tiny Himalayan Kingdom which is in defence+security point of view very important for China and other South Asian countries.

@beijingwalker @aliaselin @SBUS-CXK any thought on this?

Sikkim was already part of India union, it was a protectorate state of India.

Why are we bashing this woman ?

She's only saying what she is paid to say, as far as she is concerned, all the reports are verified.

Bash the system, not the desk jockeys slave to it.

Not 10 billion dollar but 1.2 billion dollar or 10300 crore Taka. I don't know where they got this 10 billion figure. This is absolutely false. Indian journalists are not very careful quoting numbers.
Submarine base to be built with Tk 10,300cr

Bangladesh and China has defence co-operation agreement dating back 2002. The only one of it's kind with any country for Bangladesh.

And can you tell me how are you going to pay back the borrowed money with interest? There is no way that the country will then borrow money to pay back the arrears. A country with so many unutilized population has resulted to make it a permanent 3rd world country. So, is not it wiser to learn from developed countries their technologies and apply in the country?

Borrowing money to build a few fancy projects and celebrating it as development is not a good recipe. BD will become poorer when it has to pay all its export money to the borrowers. BD is already too CRAZY to borrow that much of money. What is the result?

Sikkim was protectorate but not within Indian union. If you see the Indian map before 1975, it did not included Sikkim. Sikkim's foreign policy and security was at Indian hands, but in all other cases, it exercised self rule. It's status was same as Bhutan. Bhutan was also an Indian protectorate. But gradually Bhutan shedded it's protectorate status and turn into a full fledged UN member state in 1971. Now Bhutan host foreign embassies in it's soil and it also has embassy in some other countries. In 2007, Bhutan and India revised their original 'friendship treaty' so that Bhutan now no longer bound to seek 'Indian consultation' to formulate it's foreign policy. Now India can not enact the Sikkim saga over UN member state Bhutan without International backlash and non recognition. Sikkim also could have taken similar journey like Bhutan. But unfortunately it ended up into an entirely different fate. If China taken a more pro-active role in Sikkim, perhaps the events trajectory would have been different.
