ONLY Indian citizens can stand for election. They have to provide PROOF of their citizenship to the Election commission who VERIFIES This before accepting his candidature.

Both President of India and Army chief too needs to be Indian. But their extended family CAN be non Indians.

Because the Congress appointed IAS officer under whose tenure the Assam NRC was finalized REFUSED to accept the refugee identify cards of the Hindu Bengalis even prior to 1971, which was totally unlawful. How do you expect such Hindu refugees to prove their Indian citizenship- by furnishing birth certificates issued by Bangladeshi government? For many like Mr Biswas, their refugee cards was the only piece of document they possessed. Don't worry, we will sort out these minor kinks.
