Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was striving hard to turn Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) into a profit-making organization, a private media outlet reported.

Chairing a high-level meeting to revive the national flag carrier, PM Imran Khan said that the government evolved a comprehensive plan to uplift PIA on modern lines.

He said that the national carrier was made a liability due to mismanagement and negligence in the past tenures.

Briefing the prime minister, PIA Chief Executive Officer Air Marshal Arshad Malik said the national flag carrier was on its path to improvement, adding that its deficit was shrinking owing to the efforts of the current management.

He apprised the prime minister about the inclusion of new and modern aeroplanes in PIA’s fleet. He further discussed new routes, the latest travelling facilities to passengers and other reforms in the airline.

Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan, finance secretary and other high officials were present in the meeting.

On Monday, PIA CEO Air Marshal Arshad Malik had said that the airline will “certainly take some time to become profitable”.

I am not real fan of SOE being privatised.

Why cannot the government run SOE like private sector thus it be exposed to all risk and liabilities of a private sector company. Government can simply become a shareholder and the the business operate.

Two major arguments are efficiency and competition. If SOE are run like private sector than they can achieve the two things as well. Having SOE means government has extra money coming in as dividend payment.

well, in that case its essential privatized like PTCL(govt is 75% stake holder)

but if in BOG there is person like PMLN patwari of senate he will force corruption by inducting 6000 people retrospectively like they did in 2008(i.e they got pensions & benefits without even serving for a day!)

ISLAMABAD: As part of government’s vision to cap the losses of state-owned Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Prime Minister Imran Khan has approved the purchase of additional planes for its existing fleet, a press release issued by the airline’s spokesperson said on Wednesday.

As per the statement, the decision was taken during a meeting of the aviation division on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Aviation Secretary Shahrukh Nusrat and PIA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Air Marshal Arshad Malik.

During the meeting, the premier was given a detailed briefing by the CEO on the future aircraft requirements of the national flag carrier as well as its business plan.

According to Malik, overall 12 new planes will be added to the airline’s fleet by 2023.

“In the initial stage, four planes will be added to the fleet by 2020,” he informed the prime minister, adding that the planes will be medium-sized and “will be used for domestic and regional routes of travel”.

Malik further disclosed that the size of PIA’s fleet will go up to 45 by 2023.

Following the briefing, Prime Minister Imran Khan gave orders for the improvement of the airline’s operations and an increase in travel facilities. He also directed the finance ministry to cooperate with PIA for the purchase of the new aircraft.

It merits a mention that at the end of the January-March 2019 quarter, PIA announced that it had come out of losses at the operational level as its revenues slightly exceeded the operating cost in the quarter that ended March 31.

“PIA has achieved breakeven at the operational level,” adviser to PIA CEO had told a private media house at the time.

As per media reports, the session also approved appointments of external auditors for the financial assessment of 2017 and 2018.

The CEO said the delay in financial assessment was caused owing to the negligence of the previous administrations.

It is worth noting that the PIA and Civil Aviation Authority are heading towards its development phase in accordance with the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The government is implementing a business plan for taking out the national flag-carrier from the major financial losses to transform it into a profitable institution.

PIA – the national flag-carrier of Pakistan has met the fate of Pakistan’s current state of the economy in a way it costs much to the national income as it eats up the billions of taxpayer money in terms of deficit.

Looking at the annual losses that the state-owned enterprise has caused especially in the recent past it looks entranced that the entity would recover any soon. More often the incidents of imperfections in the service delivery and mechanical faults that happen nowadays more frequently during its flight operations adds more inconvenience on the part of passengers.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said this Tuesday that the government was making efforts to transform Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) into an efficient and profit-making entity as it was the national flag carrier and a symbol of country’s identification abroad, APP reported.

The prime minister was informed by PIA CEO that due to the untiring efforts of the current management of PIA, the airline’s losses were decreasing continuously. The increasing number of expatriates and gradual improvements in the economy are the factors conducive to the promotion of the aviation industry, he was told further.

According to the Dawn report, PM Imran Khan has approved the purchase of additional planes for PIA’s existing fleet. The decision was taken during the meeting of the aviation division. According to the Air Marshal Malik, 12 new planes will become a part of PIA’s existing fleet by the year 2023. Initially, four planes will be added to the fleet by 2020. Pakistan International Airline (PIA) has increased fares up to Rs6,000 for two sectors of Middle East – Dubai and Abu Dhabi, a private media house reported on Thursday.

After the revision of fares, a round trip from Lahore to Dubai will cost Rs61,000, while the same for Lahore-Abu Dhabi flight will be Rs61,200.

Sources said that PIA hiked the fares owing to a large influx of people travelling to these two sectors, of which most of the passengers are labourers and Iqama holders.

PIA administration has informed agents about the decision.

In July, the national flag-carrier had announced to give discounts up to 10pc to the passengers travelling from London to Sialkot from September 24 to November 30.
