New Delhi: The Indian government has made its unhappiness clear with the Ferrari F1 team's plan to display the Italian naval flag when it races in the Indian Grand Prix this weekend.

The Italian team will fly the Navy's flag to show its solidarity with two marines who were arrested last year for allegedly shooting dead two Indian fishermen.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has frowned at a statement by the Ferrari team that it hoped India and Italy would find a solution to the situation and called Italian Navy as one of the "outstanding entities of our country".

"Using sporting events to promote causes not of a sporting nature, not in keeping with spirit of sports," the MEA has said.

The National Fishermen's Forum (NFF) has also angrily condemned the move. NFF Secretary T Peter said in Thiruvananthapuram that Ferrari's decision amounted to "a shame on the nation".

"Allowing the Italian company to openly express support and solidarity to the under trials is a serious lapse on the part of the government and sports authorities of the country. We strongly demand that the company be asked to reconsider this," Mr Peter said.

However, Formula One CEO Bernie Ecclestone has distanced himself from the storm kicked up by Ferrari's decision, saying the national association should look into such "political matters".

"What we'd do, we'd look at the national sporting authority (FMSCI) here to have a look at that...we are not political." Mr Ecclestone said when asked about Ferrari's decision.

The Italian team's decision was applauded by Italy's minister for Foreign Affairs, Giulio Terzi. He tweeted: "Congratulations to Ferrari for displaying the Navy's symbol at the India GP. It will show the sailors the whole country is behind them."

The marines allegedly killed the Indian fishermen along the Kerala coastline while escorting cargo vessel Enrica Lexie. They said that the fishermen were mistaken for pirates, who are normally found off the north African and Arab peninsular coast in the Gulf of Aden.

The marines were arrested and kept in a government guest house, kicking off a political storm. They have since been bailed by the Kerala court hearing the case.

The case had created some heartburn in India relations with Italy, which had wanted the marines to be tried at home, claiming that the shooting happened in international waters. India said that it was within its own waters.

As a tit for tat, Force India team should display Indian navy flag

How is that tit for tat or even better we could ask one of the fishermen to drive the Force one car. :D on a serious note we should let it go unnotticed, the more we shout the more they get noticed.

It would get noticed even if we didn't shout. Remember F1 race is telecast all over the world. Ferrari shouldn't have got into politics. They should focus on racing instead.

Either do something equally symbolic using ONLY soft power, or be quiet and not do something stupid. It is just a sport, not war....Ferrari and Italy are acting stupid, but are within their rights to do this. We should show magnanimity and let the issue dies its own death.

In the larger schedme of things, we need to suck it up. Our standing in F1 is nothing compared to Italy's so we cannot protest or boycott in a formal way (the loss is only ours). Situation is similar to the 60s and 70s when India had no standing in cricket and could hardly do anything except show solidarity with countries like SA and West Indies.

I am quiet enjoying it, it shows that India has really found power & stature in new world order, a world of 21st century. So much so that former Axis power like Italy is finding it hard to free it's 2 marines from India, those who have surely committed crime but in international waters under either international jurisdiction or Italian one. Italy could do nothing but to show it's frustration like this. My suggestion to the Italian team will be that not even ur entire navy can do anything, so what will ur naval flag do??? :D

How can ferrari even think of doing this ?? Are they crazy .
O.k. Italy you may have your marines back but in exchange for them we would like to kill 2 of your fishermen in Venice and except to get a warm reception and get away with the killing . Howzzz dat :hitwall:

So true, wouldn't it get more noticed if we also start beating the drums with them. The truth remain that justice will be served despite them painting a flag on their car.

Let them do it, they are our guests and we see them as god.. No one is going to notice what they are doing.. we are a democracy and we give right to speak to our citizen, and they are guest why not to.. But our cunning media is just publicising this news... mostly Times now..:hitwall:

I will be more ashamed if Sonia Gandhi arrives on the event with a Italian Navy Flag on her car. :cheesy:

we shld call upon the kins or widows of dead fishermens to flag off the F1 race then

but we won't coz its not our culture....guest is considered god...nor do we bad mouth the host when we go as a guest somewhere... Italy may be a developed nation but its has yet to develop guest & host ethics & ettiquette i guess:sick:

I like the way you think. Those Italians sailors shot innocent fishermen and ppl in kerala will make sure they get justice. Unless the f-king govt sidelines us. But if they do we will make sure Sonia pays dearly by using our political power.

Visa revoke karo aur kya. Obviously the Ferrari team is involved in acts which they did not declare as their purpose in their visa application. And they are taking us as stupid, giving statements saying there is no 'political intention'.
