In light of the ongoing global energy crisis, Dhaka is seeking a long-term partnership with Delhi to buy its surplus fuel, said said Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen yesterday (August 29, 2022).

"India is in a better position on the fuel issue. So, we will try to go for a long-term deal with them if they have a surplus. But it will depend on how much surplus they have. They have their own supply and demand thing," he told reporters at the foreign ministry.

He expected the Indian government will agree to help.

The issue, among others, will be discussed during the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to India scheduled for September 5-8.

Russia faces sanctions from the US and European countries following its invasion in Ukraine. India, however, managed to buy Russian fuel.

Bangladesh has also tried to buy Russian oil, but its refinery does not have the right technology for that.

The government has been in talks with India over the issue as it has been grappling with the issues of price hike of essentials, largely triggered by hike in fuel prices.

We don't have a surplus; most of our own energy needs are met by imports.
It is not that of a problem that India has no or little surplus of oil.

India can import oil from Russia in larger quantity than it needs, processes in the refineries, and sells off the surplus quantity to BD at a premium.

Russia, India and BD - all the three parties, shippers and land truckers- all will be happy with wide smile.

Yeah it's true we are likely going ahead with that arrangement, but terming it surplus is incorrect.
We can probably absorb any amount of cheap oil we can get for ourselves. Plus we export a lot of petro products.

So later you can abuse India and Indians. Bangladeshis are the most thankless people on this earth.

I think @Bilal9 will dislike this novel arrangement only because BD dollars will find ways to enter India and BD will become poorer than now. He may also think that without timely payments, India will complain the matter to the WTO.

Yes, because of Mullah teaching, our people are generally a group of ingrates. No humanity, no sincerety and no thanks giving.

Why Bangladesh should be thankful towards India for purely a business transaction? Will India feed Bangladesh it's fuel by starving itself? Why Bangladesh be thankful towards India for this probable business transaction when India is harming Bangladesh in numerous other ways? India is taking full advantage of a ''friendly'' regime in Bangladesh and getting benefit in many ways. Just one recent example, we have opened our roads, railway, rivers, ports for usage of India while getting very little or nothing in return. Will India feel grateful for that? Will their gratitude will translate into zero killing of Bangladeshi citizen by BSF in the border? or halting anti-Bangladeshi propaganda by their hindutva goons?

India never did anything for Bangladesh out of benevolence, not even the so much talked about ''big help'' in 1971. India benefitted as much from Bangladesh's independence as Bangladesh itself. Transformation of Eastern wing of belligerent Pakistan into a militarily toothless, friendly neighbor whom they are milking like a cash cow itself is a huge strategic relieve and delight for their security planners.

India is making a war profit by taking advantage of misfortune of Ukraine and Russia. A selfish, cunning, thieving Chanakya will sale some surplus Petroleum for profit to you. What's so noble about this act which Bangladesh should be grateful about?

Russian oil imported by India has Ukrainian blood, alleges Ukraine's foreign minister

Exactly.

It only make sense if bd getting discounted Russian oil directly . Otherwise no point.

I'm assuming, it would still end up being cheaper than market oil. With baniyas obviously making obscene profits. As usual, taking advantage of others misfortune.

that said if they are reasonable and keep the markup reasonable, it could be a fair deal.
