The government has asked the business representatives to file their concerns over the sales tax (ST) sector wise in writing so that they could be addressed by the tax authorities to finalise recommendations before August 14.

An official source said the government made this recommendation at the first meeting of the Sales Tax Committee, which was attended by the representatives of various chambers to resolve sales tax related issues facing different sectors.

The committee was formed after FPCCI and various chambers offered to act as a bridge to resolve the lingering issues related to tax compliance between the traders and Federal Board of Revenue.
The meeting was chaired by Convener of the Committee Rana Muhammad Afzal Khan, also Parliamentary Secretary Finance and participated by Muhammad Ashraf Khan, Member (Inland Revenue) Operations, FBR, Ashfaq Tola of TRC/TAC, Asif Haroon of FCA, Asad Mashahdi, President Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Anjum Nisar, President KCCI.

The committee discussed various suggestions and proposals. Some of the members identified sectors with potential issues requiring threadbare discussions for resolution. The tax authorities attended the meeting recommended that the chambers should give their recommendations sector wise in writing so that they could properly addressed. This was agreed by the chambers representatives and it was decided that the recommendations will be filed in writing and they would be sorted out in the meeting on August 6 and 7.

Chairing the meeting, Rana Muhammad Afzal Khan said the government was keen to resolve the sales tax issues facing the business community and it was open to all suggestions from the business community to facilitate them to ensure a business-friendly environment in the country.

He said the next meetings of the committee would dilate on a host of sales tax related issues facing different sectors which had been identified in consultation with the business community. He said the committee would also hold sector-to-sector meetings and the recommendations of the committee would be firmed up by August 13 and presented to the government.

I seriously dont understand what our govt's prob is...THEY are a PUBLIC servant....A democratic public servant which means THEY should serve US best should ASK before imposing SHIT on us!

In EU polls and questionnaires are distributed and filled before a stupid decision to burden or make the public unhappy takes place! Cant these monarchs understand?

It takes US to protest, shut down cities before govt wakes up to the shit they did!

.
So where are the protests to "shut down cites"? Nowhere. :D

. .
Those are traders protesting, not the people. big difference.

. .
Traders strike for their own benefit, it is not a protest by the population at large. Either way, the people suffer, but they still do not protest. Strange.

. .
I believe it's the traders who were/ are supposed to protest not the people.

Yes, the people will suffer the higher prices due to added taxes without protests. They must be rich. :D

it is not a protest by the population at large.
It IS a protest by those involved and effected by introduction of such tax

Either way, the people suffer, but they still do not protest. Strange.
Protest can mean shutting their shops and letting country economics suffer....

It is still a protest...

I cant believe you were fighting on a thread and still can contradict yourself :o:

This is not a protest, it is a refusal to pay taxes by the traders to avoid documentation of their businesses.

Actual payment of tax is made by the consumers, which they pay irrespective traders pay it to government or not. Now it's the traders who feel stomachache once they are asked to file tax returns or any procedure is suggested which may give a clue of their turnover, they even discourage use of credit cards for their this purpose. However this tricky affair has to be handled with care and government has to give confidence to people and avoid such indirect taxes.

It is so unfortunate.

These traders would rather pay "bhatta" than to pay taxes.

These traders would rather hire personal body guards rather than taking over the expense of local police station
These traders would rather send their kids to private school rather than taking over the expense of local government school.

Too bad we the Pakistanis want everything

but we do not want to pay for anything. especially our government services.

Peace

Rich people but a poor government makes for a disastrous way of financing a country.

.
Yes poor government makes for a disastrous way but some sane people in government have to find reasons that why they have to adopt this way. Government has to look into some of following
1. If it is making judicious use of tax collected on appropriate projects.
2. Tax collected is being used for welfare or spent on useless foreign trips and luxuries.
3. Ensure all citizens are being imposed taxes evenly/rationally or certain classes are exempted and big businessman and industrialists are protected.
4. Are there any failures in enhancing tax base and government is resorting to easy means to hide its incompitence or any other reasons.
