Tarakan, N Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government has responded aggressively to the second kidnapping of Indonesian residents by the Philippines-based Abu Sayyaf armed group by stationing elite troops in the city of Tarakan in North Kalimantan.

The statement was delivered by Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) General Gatot Nurmantyo on April 18, 2016, while reviewing the preparedness of the three-dimensional elite troops, which were rehearsing in Tarakan. Nurmantyo was accompanied by several high-ranking Indonesian military and police officers.

The commander stated that his visit to Tarakan city was in line with President Joko Widodos instructions in a bid to address the second kidnapping of Indonesians by the militant group.

"My visit to this place (Tarakan) is based on President Widodos order to respond assertively to the second kidnapping of Indonesians by the Abu Sayyaf group," he informed journalists.

In view of the Indonesian citizens held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf militants in the Philippines, President Widodo has instructed the TNI to ready troops to be deployed at any time and in any critical situation.

General Nurmantyo affirmed that the purpose of his visit to the city was to analyze the situation and readiness of the troops to fight at any time as Tarakan was located in proximity to the border areas of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, where the Indonesian residents had been held hostage by the gunmen group.

"Tarakan City is selected as the location for the elite troops to rehearse as it is located very close to the border areas and the location of the Indonesians being held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf group," he stated.

However, he noted that the TNI was still holding exercises in other areas and will also determine the subsequent locations to conduct the rehearsals secretly.

With the Indonesian authorities still struggling to secure the release of the 10 sailors kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf group since March 26, 2016, the nation is now facing yet another hostage crisis involving four more Indonesians who were abducted in the waters of the Malaysia-Philippine maritime border.

The four Indonesian crew members were kidnapped on April 15 at 6:31 p.m. local time when unidentified pirates tried to hijack two Indonesian-flagged boats: tugboat TB Henry, and Barge Christi.

The two boats were on their way from Cebu, the Philippines, to Tarakan, North Kalimantan, when the hijacking occurred, the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry noted in a statement in Jakarta on April 16.

The boats carried 10 Indonesian crew members, of which one was shot, five managed to escape, and four were abducted by the pirates.

In a two-minute video viewed by The Straits Times, the hostages are shown demanding the government to pay a ransom of 900 million pesos, or US$26.5 million, by 3 p.m. local time on April 25.(*)

how many people must be abducted until Ph government started to get their act up together with their big mouth

Given how the Aquino administration turned a blind eye on what happened in Mamasapano back in January 2015, don't expect anything; PH government at present is sadly apathetic and are more busy in making themselves "look good for history books."

Maritime joint patrol between Indonesia, Malaysia & Phillipine is a must in this area to assure the safety of navigation for all. Government present & control in form of naval patrol should be established as soon as possible around this waters.

if so then they could've let our Army deal with the kidnappers personally. i know PH does not care about the hostages, but we do. the govt should've let the TNI to infiltrate into PH and saves the hostages.

Without support from Philippine government and armed forces, this will become an impossible rescue mission. That area are rebel stronghold. They are well armed and well trained, plus they know the field really well. Although i do believe that if allowed, TNI' strike forces can wipe the rebel in the long run, but the rescue mission, will most probably, failed.

If that is politically possible...

The PH govt could have just for once stop doing stupid things and get their crap together and do what is needed, the hostages could have been freed, sadly bureaucracy is in the way.

it won't be impossible at all. we've been fighting GAM and OPM for decades. the MILF is nothing as strong as the other two, not that GAM and OPM were strong in any way. their only way to get money is to demand ransom which is only attainable if the govt responded. otherwise, they're simply a gun armed militant.

thing is, the more we have to wait, the more the lives of the hostages will be in danger. there is no proof that the hostages are in good condition, regardless of what the ph military head says.

PH govt can let our army to interfere and infiltrate their hideouts, as we are more than willing to save our men than PH does. that way, we can mind our own business.

just remember, the lives of those hostages might be determinal to the relationship of both countries. we released Mary Jane Veloso. is it that hard to return the favor?

That stupid first of all that case is different second the constitution of my country only allows military forces in the Philippines if that country has mutual defense pact with the Philippines but even then you are not allow participate any operation in Philippine territory unless if we were dealing with a other country that both our countries are at war with. The Abus are on the run so the best thing Indonesia can do is to joint naval patrol with Philippines and Malaysia to cut off all avenues of escape for these terrorist.

Destroying MILF in conventional war will be easy. But here we are talking about conducting rescue mission in alien rebel stronghold. Without heart, ear and eye from the Philippine government & its intelligent, any military operation effort taken by TNI to rescue the hostages will fail. MILF can just slaughter the hostages once they know about the operation.

Mary Jane were spared because the indonesian govt still regard PH, while on the other hand we're executing the australians. you don't get the point? now if i may ask, what has PH done in favor of ID?

doing a patrol for what is essentially not our problem? your govt doesn't care about our kidnapped countrymen and now you want us to help you patrolling to solve your own problem? are you for real?

their support is useless. this is ancient problem started since 1960. when the problem almost resolved in 1997, they broke the agreement in 2000 as to make everything goes to waste. as this problem has been unresolved, and their govt refused to solve it since old times, then their govt must have anything to do with terrorist themselves.

the stronghold itself isn't much different. it'll be all jungle like in any SEA countries. the land forces is the master of guerilla warfare so i doubt this will pose much difficulties unlike the one we fought in our land.

it cannot be helped if the hostages were killed. all that matters is Effort. the lives of the hostages depends on our military experts, not on the other side as they're busy with the election themselves.

The most important issue regarding this situation now is the security, safety and the returning of the hostages. Anything else are just noises.

Indonesia will do what we have to do for now, that is securing & patroling our border surrounding that damned sea, preparing strike forces around that area just in case our diplomatic negotiation with the Philippines govt can be pushed through, and hope for the best.

The company already agree to pay the ransom money btw.

Because that's the only option again if we did not care why did we continue to go after abus in the first place these arrogant terrorist? the best way is to not pay ransom cut avenues of escape and what is the point of using mary jane in to this its different case
