A Meeting was held between senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf members and Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google on his first visit to Pakistan. The meeting was attended by Vice President PTI Shah Mehmood Qureishi, Secretary General Dr. Arif Alvi, Information secretary Shafqat Mehmood, and Senior members like Salman Danish and Dr. Awab Alvi.

The issues discussed were the prospects of using electronic and social media platforms in Pakistan.

The meeting also discussed technological help needed in conducting free and fair elections in Pakistan and shed light upon how to improve the use of digital technology to empower the people of Pakistan.

Well, this meeting would take a positive image of Pakistan to the west. PTI team must get hatts off as Eric Schmidt decided to meet them during his first ever visit to Pakistan. PTI has taken this initiative to have transparent, free and fair elections in Pakistan.

Eric Schmidt, Chairman Google, Quietly Visits Pakistan

By Aamir Attaa · Friday, Jun 15, 2012

Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman and ex-CEO of Google, quietly landed in Pakistan yesterday to meet senior leadership of the country, we just got confirmation from the sources.

While his visit is kept hidden from media for reasons not known to us, Eric is likely to fly back today.

Sources tell us that this two day visit was primarily focused on bettering company’s relations with Pakistani government, which remained bumpy over the time.

It is unclear so far if Google will issue an official statement on Eric’s visit to Pakistan or not. It maybe recalled that Eric Schmidt is Executive Chairman of Google and his visits to countries around the world is part of company’s efforts for strengthening relations with governments.

Through state run news agency we know that Eric Schmidt yesterday met Prime Minister, Mr. Yousaf Raza Gillani in Islamabad.

Express Tribune, while carrying APP’s report, has said that Gillani sought Google’s help in tracking cross-border movement across the Durand line.

The Prime Minister highlighted that over 40,000 people crossed the hundreds of kilometers long border on a daily basis and it was virtually impossible to keep a physical check at some locations due to the rough terrain despite presence of Pakistani check posts.

The Google chief said that building up and maintaining of databases through use of information technology was crucial to deal with security issues as well as law and order situation.

In a strange move, Gilani sought Google’s help in establishing Universal Service Centers at union council levels throughout the country. Government is planning to auction this project under the umbrella of USF.

Bypassing all the necessary modalities and auctioning procedures, Mr. Gilani offered Google setting up of Universal Service Centers which probably could be better done through local firms.

We are not even sure if Google can provide hardware, software, maintenance and trainings for such a project.

The Prime Minister maintained that Pakistan deeply acknowledged and recognized the efforts being carried out by Google for undertaking various community-based projects in the country.

Google has faced action from Pakistan, including threats of being blocked if it failed to cooperate in restricting access to objectionable content available on Google and its various services including video sharing social network YouTube, which was blocked in 2010.

Pakistan has also sought cooperation from Google to clamp down on accounts operated for and by terrorists. Having said this, it must be noted that Pakistan has rarely contacted Google for content removal requests or for acquiring information of Google users.

lol. You ppl jump on conclusion so early

The same person meet with PM

and with the officials of Punjab Government

http://www.defence.pk/forums/current-events-social-issues/157676-punjab-get-google-street-view-maps-cultural-sites.html

Google Street View, a notable mapping service from Google, is going to capture special locations and cultural sites in the province to let internet users to explore these spots through 360-degree street-level imagery.

Google Pakistan’s Facebook page said that a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Punjab government and Google for Street View Special Collects for tourism promotion of heritage and cultural sites.

Tourism Secretary Dr. Allah Bakhsh Malik and William Fitzgerald of Google Asia signed the document.

Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Provincial Finance Minister Kamran Michael, Planning and Development Chairman, Irrigation Secretary, Information Technology Board Chairman and representatives from Google were also present.

No it won’t be full scale street map of Punjab, instead Google will incorporate street-level imagery only for cultural locations in Punjab into Google Maps, which will be made available for worldwide internet users.

It is learned that Tourism Ministry will lead Google in location selection for the street view imagery.

^^^ lol @ your approach and mentality.

That's a welcoming gesture if someone from a company like Google comes and show their interest in investing here, and certainly he had to meet country's leadership, which is in itself a great news. I first read the news of them meeting wit PTI leadership so I posted here, then I came to know they met our PM too so I posted the news too, and I've heard they met Shahabaz Sharif too but can't find the news anywhere (if you could help me with that) and post it here.

PTI is not any officials nor holding any Govt. position but yet Eric met them - does that ring any bells or are you going to term PTI a Yahoodi Party now and come with those typical aye baye shaye replies?
