India backs new acid attack laws

India has proposed tough new measures to deal with acid violence.

Acid attacks are are a problem throughout South Asia, with cases also reported in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Campaigners say that women who reject lovers, husbands or employers are often targeted by men using easily available and cheap chemicals.

The outcome of acid attacks is often not murder but life-long torture in the form of permanent disfigurement or scarring of the face.

The Indian government is considering special legislation that would classify acid attacks as a "most heinous form of offence".

The proposals include better compensation to cover the cost of expensive reconstruction surgery for the victims and their physical and psychological rehabilitation.

The plans must be approved by the federal cabinet as well as parliament before taking effect.

The Minister for Women and Child Development, Renuka Chowdhury, says the government plans to bring the bill before parliament next month.

Campaigners say acid attacks are a cruel and inhuman act because the victims often suffer terrible disfigurement while the perpetrators frequently get away with minor punishments - under the current law the punishment is not so severe if the victim does not die.

The Indian Supreme Court has already expressed concern that victims are not getting justice.

Calls have grown for the country to take the lead from its neighbour Bangladesh, which has already brought in special laws including provision for the death sentence to deal with acid attacks.

Laws and laws and laws and no implementation that is the dilema of all of our countries here in sub-continent.

If these are implemented only then we are going to have benfit.

Its noted that Bangladesh has very strong law against acid violence like death sentence

 bravo. Bangladesh has also about 100% literacy rate which is enough to shame India and Pakistan for our pathatic literacy rate .:)

Yes. Only people's consciousness can resolve the problems.

But the thing is that only high literacy rate can make nation conscious and so they can feel their right to fight for.

Bangladesh is the most peaceful country in South Asia.

My father is a 1971 war veteran and is invited to bangladesh by the GoB for the independence day celebrations on 26 march 2009.

All this with free air ticket from Chennai to Dhaka, via dumdum.

He was part of the 33 corps that fought in Jamalpur. He is 67 years old now.
He still remembers of how Mukti bahini which fought bravely, laid down their arms immediately after war, and started in reconstruction of bridges with engineers of Indian army and mukti bahini also played an important role in bringing up the postal system.

I like bangladesh very much. They are true musalman's, who live in peace.

You will be happy to know that now Bangladesh think of monorail, elevated express/highway, etc.

There was a program on the BBC a few months back about the phenomenon of acid-attacks on women in India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh did set a precedent by taking some positive steps to tackle the problem, and they've drastically reduced these attacks.
