GMR row: India freezes aid to Maldives, ties under stress

Don't worry, we will not send any rescue missions any time soon. They know that we are important for their economy. More Indian tourists are vacationing in Maldives and it is growing at a rate of 28% annually. As Indian middle class grows, this pie is bound to increase substantially. Chinese tourism to the island has increased by 90% annually. For Maldives it is a delicate path to tread. They are not is a position to antagonize their neighbors because their economy depends on them. They will find some amicable solution soon.

The Maldivians will have to sort out things and soon enough. They can't afford to let matters drag on and scare away tourist.
As it is they are "between the devils (within) and the deep sea (surrounding them on all sides)".

As a Parsi I find that really sad.

So do many Hindus - the slightly less chilled out and phlegmatic kattar ones at least.

In light of Islamic conquests of the subcontinent and the forced conversions, Muslims of India (which includes Pakistan and Bangladesh of course) are often condescendingly clubbed under the umbrella term of kamjor khoon.

I guess your perspective is diametrically different .....

Doc i end this topic here with just one line that the kamjoor khoon stayed back in India while the braves one fought it to reach Pakistan.

Period.

Lets focus on Maldives.

How they are scaring the tourists?? Since Chinese tourism increased there i dont see any reason for Chinese tourists to get scared.

The Maldives Govt will probably realize their mistake, and things will probably be solved diplomatically in India's favour in the near future. The Maldives people have always been pro-India, and the Govt was too until recently.

Its a business deal, the Maldives Govt is scrapping illegally. If they actually go ahead with this, no foreign investor in their right mind would ever invest in Maldives, knowing that the Govt might illegally scrap their investments. It would do them much more harm than good, if they actually go ahead with it.

Not yet, dude. This matter of the airport contract is just a fall-out of the internal strife between the Maldivian politicians. These are incipient signs. The contractor GMR is only the scape-goat. Just as India got dragged in because of GMR. Let it increase, and it will spill over in to the streets. That is when the real trouble will start. Lets see how many tourists come then. Chinese or Martian?

Tourists come to Maldives to eat, drink and make merry on the virgin beaches. Not to be exposed to unrest.

Thats what you are assuming. Keeping in mind history of Maldives i dont think so there can be any bad spill over to the streets so your guess is merely speculation that too weak one.

the point is NOT that Maldives will bow down after Indian pressure but the Indian blackmail is of far greater importance to shape future actions by Maldives :)

How is it blackmail LOL. Its aid, money we give them for free. Its our money, therefore our choice whether we give aid to them, or not give it to them, or decide to wipe our a*ses with the aid money instead. Its not like they are entitled to the money, they just get that money as goodwill, and if they (the Maldives Govt that is) are not going to return the goodwill, then no aid money :)

you've a funny way to look at things. The Maldives govt. is clearly at fault here. When they've made the contract with GMR they've agreed to settle all the issues with either Singapore or UK courts and the Singapore court has ruled in favor of GMR and still the Maldives are not allowing GMR to go through with their work and so Indian govt. is doing the only thing that it can. Is that what you call blackmail?

Maldives is indeed friendly BUT INDIA Is NOT. You had been bullying maldives taking advantage of its weak situation but time is changing and its NOT an era of colonisation hence Maldives is showing signs of resistance now.

We have been friendly with Maldives and have been giving aid to the tune of 350 million dollars. India never had colonisation bug. Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sikkim, Sri Lanka and Maldives are all soverign nations and we respect as such.

The person (Andromachi) that you are addressing your post at knows nothing about the niceties of legal contracts, International Laws or the nuances of current affairs.

The contract was abrogated unilaterally by one party: Maldives Govt.(in this case-the respondent). The other party: GMR(the plaintiff) then approached the duly constituted forum under whose jurisdiction that Contract was drawn up and intrinsically submitted to. The Jurisdictional Forum: Singapore High Court found for the plaintiffs. The Respondents have chosen to defy the order of the Jurisdictional Form. Now tell me who is in breach of Law, and who could be considered to be the 'black-mailer'! :D

Of course, ignorant people can spout anything to fit their agenda!

I know legal side.

What the Ignorant Indians dont know that their bullying mentality is what is wrong here :)

Yes its your choice BUT to use it as a pressure tool in a matter which you Indians claim has a legal implication, is indeed a BLACKMAIL

and if they (the Maldives Govt that is) are not going to return the goodwill, then no aid money :)

 and here comes the banya factor. come on either its goodwill or its NOT at all when you DEMAND facilities in return for so-called aid/goodwill

There is no bullying, if they dont want to honour a court verdict we should scale down cooperation with them.

What other means do you suggest we help them with ?

Help them prove in court that the deal was corrupt and, therefore, void. If proven, it would also expose the dirty business practices used by Indian companies to defraud the Maldivian nation.

Nasheed and said the deal was corrupt.

Perhaps our resident Gold medal world champion of corruption, Mr. Zardari, can lend his expertise.
