So @Norwegian I take it that these Facebook guys did not have a CAB process followed, the concept of testing before rolling out to PROD, technical reviews, rollback plans, before pulling the trigger and watching in horror as the whole motherlode came crashing down?

If no one involved caught the possible repercussions, I expect some heads to roll unfortunately...

I have worked in govt. outfits where no change is approved without software signature approvals.

Today at 1651 UTC, we opened an internal incident entitled "Facebook DNS lookup returning SERVFAIL" because we were worried that something was wrong with our DNS resolver 1.1.1.1. But as we were about to post on our public status page we realized something else more serious was going on.

Interesting though if the service provider goes down then the entire customer base could get affected.

Cisco may benefit from the outage and sell more Thousand Eyes !!!!Have a look at this https://www.thousandeyes.com/blog/facebook-outage-analysis . This has sequence of events in human readable format. I am sure this (or equivalent tool) helped to accelerate the RCA .

This outage should have become permanent. The world needs respite from silliness on Facebook, the vain people on Instagram and the spread of fake news, poison and criminality in the WhatsApp University. They were announcing the outage and investigation progress on Twitter. That should show you the importance of having an alternative, even when that alternative is your competitor.

Hi, have you noticed how much this situation has destabilized people? Many of my friends could not find a place for themselves because they could not understand what was happening, and this unknown scared them. I even heard that after this incident, people started using services like megafamous.com much more often to develop the page faster and have more likes and subscribers in case there are interruptions in the work of Instagram again. It seems that this is just ridiculous; in addition to social networks, there should be at least something else in a person's life.
