Girl ‘raped by 38 men’ in Malaysia

A 15-year-old girl was raped for hours by 38 Muslim men on May 20, in an abandoned hut in the country's northern state of Kelantan. Police have apprehended at least 13 individuals, and are looking for others suspected of the crime.

The victim apparently met a female friend of hers, who lured her into the empty hut, which was reportedly a local drug haunt. Police are also investigating the 17-year-old, to see if she was also raped.

Of those detained, several tested positive for amphetamine, and police say that this crime could have been prevented had villagers, including neighbors just 20-meters away, reported the presence of the addicts.

"It is very disturbing to me that no one in the village was even suspicious when the closest neighbor was a mere 20-meters away," reported Police Chief Azham to The Star daily.

Nearly 3,000 rapes have been reported to the Malaysian police since 2012. Of these, 52 percent involved girls 16 or younger.

Those convicted of rape can face 30 years in prison, and whippings, though some are pushing for harsher punishments.

This incident is just one of several cases of brutality that has taken place recently, displaying just how vilely Muslims treat women across Asia and the world. These acts have caused outrage among women's groups, while authorities from the Muslim party, which controls the region, have proposed stricter penalties to deter criminals.

"We are seeing a prevalence in rape cases because boys are raised in an environment where they think it is okay to use violence," said Suri Kempe of Sisters of Islam.

Other cases of rape in Asia include the fatal gang rape of a physiotherapy student in India in 2012, and the rape of two teenage cousins from a low caste in India, who where then hung from a tree.

In Pakistan, a pregnant woman was also bludgeoned to death by her family when she married against the wishes of her parents.

38 Men Rape 1 Fifteen Year Old in Malaysia
Malaysian police have detained 13 men and are looking for other suspects following allegations that a 15-year-old girl was raped by 38 men in the country’s northern region.

Astro Awani television and The Star newspaper reported that the assault took place in the northern state of Kelantan on May 20, when the girl was lured to an empty hut reported to be a local drug haunt.

The men took turns to rape her for hours. Police are also investigating whether her 17-year-old friend was also raped.

Media accounts, quoting information from district police chief Azham Otham, said 38 men were involved.

Several of those detained had tested positive for amphetamine, the reports said. The New Straits Times said a man and his two teenage sons were among those detained.

Police said action could have been taken had villagers reported the addicts’ presence, Reuters news agency said.

“It is very disturbing to me that no one in the village was even suspicious when the closest neighbour was a mere 20 metres away,” Otham told The Star newspaper.

‘Extremely worrying’

The alleged attack, one of several brutal cases this week underscoring the violence to which women are being subjected across Asia, sparked outrage among women’s groups.

Politicians from a Muslim party running the region said their proposal to introduce Islamic hudud law, with harsh penalties, would deter offenders.

Suri Kempe, an official with women’s rights group Sisters in Islam, told Reuters that the frequent number of rape cases being reported was “extremely worrying”.

“Boys are being raised in a culture where being masculine means being aggressive, and that it’s perfectly acceptable to use violence to get what you want,” she said in a statement.

Almost 3,000 rapes were reported to the police in Malaysia in 2012, of which 52 percent involved girls aged 16 and below, according to police statistics.

Convicted rapists face up to 30 years in prison and whipping, but many have called for stricter punishment.
