Gillard's push for uranium sales to India

thats great man.....but wait let it be frist.....i doubt!

they will supply uranium

if they don't some other nation will

they know this and they will want to bag the deal because other powers are waiting for opportunity to grab this deal

.
All this has to be seen in the context of recent lobbying by the US to create an US-India-Australia alliance against China.

Gillard just met with Obama at the G20 summit and Obama is due to visit Australia soon.

How obvious ! Australia was in a spot not because of America but because of opposition's take on the ruling party's foreign policy. In numerous debates, the ruling party was in a fix as to why they were going against a rising [regional] power. The number of students going to Australia for studying has also dropped after some friction and Australia is doing its best to patch things up.

Telling US is involved in every diplomatic victory is taking it a bit too far. In the G20, Manmohan Singh was very much in the thick of things.

Why everyone is making big waves about Australia uranium sale to India.
Very recently i realized Australia even exist on world map. :)

You have to understand the Indian mindset. The common Indian people (or for that matter Pakistanis or Bangladeshis or Srilankans etc.) are always hungry for international recognition more than for anything else.

While I am talking only about most of the common people from poor to middle class families, it is so mainly due to their being called poor/third world people for so long. Anything that takes them to equal level with the ones that are rich or better off will be celebrated with all the fanfare. Or tell me why, is there such a sudden dearth of Uranium in the world? Or is it that doing business with Australia can solve some giant purpose without which India would cease to exist?

Gillard does not speak for or represent all of Australia. That's just her personal opinion.

You sound pretty alien to the concept of democracy... 'guess the generals left a lasting impression on the people over there... in Uganda :D

Well, duh! Of course Gillard is not going to admit that she changed her mind because of American pressure. But you would have to follow recent developments in the American-Australian relationship and the very visible American push to firm up an anti-China alliance in the region. India was specifically mentioned as a key member of this new alliance.

Well duh! It is your assumption that it is due to US pressure. You are not that important that she will hold a press conference to let you know that what you think is bull.

Uncle SAM is breaking every rule that the West created :

1. PROLIFERATED Nuke technology to India when the world opposed it.
2. Pressuring Australia to sell India Uranium when India refused to sign the NPT

Double Standard by USA !!!

If India can force the US to pressure its ally Australia into doing stuff for India... man I can only imagine India's might, that too at a considerably smaller economy when compared to the big players. Wonder what would happen when India does become one of the big players...

India was specifically mentioned as a key member of this new alliance.

Where did you hear that 'mentioning'?

:usflag: And what can you do about it ?

It is a good time to be an Indian not because we so desperately needed the Uranium and got it. India wanted Australia to recognise India as a raising power and this U turn that hardly happens in foreign policy is an acknowledgement.

We are not going to have any more strict regulations than we already have. Australia has to be content with it. When USA/Canada/France have no problems with our nuclear safety record and regulations then what special weed does Australia smokes that they have problem with our rules and regulations

You misunderstood my post. There will be strict conditions on the sale in other words India will need to guarantee thet the uranium will not be used for weapons.

Wanting others to recognise India as a Rising Power doesn't not mean India is one. India has to work towards it and not beg or nag other to recognise her as one.

It has got nothing to do with anyones pressure.

People need to understand that Australia has it own interests too. If selling uranium to India undermines Australian interest then we will never sell it, no matter who puts pressure. Australia is not Pakistan, that it will buckle under US pressure and do things which are not in its interest.

Not to forget that the mining industry has been pushing for this for quite some time now.

Can you go to Canberra and say thank you on behalf of us?

Yes, India will guarantee because our first priority is energy security, we already have enough nuclear war-heads. Indian government is investing billions on power sector and they need fuel to run those power plants.

Exactly. Australia is independent.

Complete ignorance on your part !!
india tested prototype nuclear device way back in 1974. At that time, INDIA had other grave things like green revolution etc in mind to feed the masses. SO, the plans for furthur development was shelved. It was primarily due to INdia's test that NPT was developed in first place !!
