ISLAMABAD: Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman has proposed the federal government include the Ghizer-Tajikistan route into the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects to directly connect the G-B with Central Asian countries.

During his recent meeting with Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan, the GB chief minister said the Ghizer-Tajikistan route would be the most feasible and accessible project to connect Pakistan with Central Asian countries through land route. He urged that the route be built and connected to the CPEC so that an alternative access is available to Pakistan from the G-B.

Rehman said the project would not only be beneficial for people of the G-B but would also offer both Pakistan and China the nearest route to the Central Asian states, adding that the CPEC is envisaged to develop connectivity with the entire region.

A commerce ministry official, who was part of the meeting, said the G-B CM said an initial survey and feasibility study of the Ghizer-Tajikistan road project was conducted by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government back in 1993.

However, despite the practicability of the project, subsequent governments have ignored it, he said.

One can only hope that Federal government looks into this project, it can be a game changer. It will act as a shorter route for us, it will bring prosperity in the region too. This road link should be made part of CPEC...We need to play our cards smartly, this project should seriously be looked at.

Nice advise by the C.M and It is of immense importance to understand the need of this project "CPEC" not just for two countries i.e China and Pakistan ,but also for all neighborhood countries which shares boundaries with Pakistan. We must open our gates for trade and for all so that all sorts of unrest and chaos must be eliminated which is primarily caused because of financial hurdles.we are living in a era where we need to co exist and must benefit each other through mutual cooperation and understanding.Days of fighting and hatred are almost gone now and specially country like India needs to understand this. Peaceful world is prosper world and only way to gain that peace is to indulge yourself in such productive trade activities so that people can live in a meaningful way.

We need direct road access to Tajiksitan/Central asia.

Maybe we should strike some land swap deal with Afghanistan.

Why does the access have to be direct? What is wrong with using the KKH to China and then to the east to reach the CAS, given the nature and volume of the trade possible?

Because it will be easier for central asian states to have direct access to Pakistan.

Anyway KKH already has signboard in tajik language.

There need not be direct access for CAS to Pakistan given that traffic can move in both directions via KKH. That route will work out just fine.

I wouldn't agree with this route, at least not yet. 1) The route will have to cross through the Wakhan Corridor which is Northern Alliance territory. Not only is it law-less but it is also anti-Pakistan territory. 2) The Wakhan Corridor's border with Pakistan is made of very high mountains with almost no natural routes through them to the other side and then its border with Tajikistan is the same story, building a highway through it will be a very very tough task. 3) This road would be a pretty major endeavour to build and then even more so to maintain, not to mention the expense. 4) Pakistan already has an established route to the whole of Central Asia, including Tajikistan, via China. Roads, rail, pipelines, depots, ports, terminals, you name it. Why would then Pakistan want to spend so much time, money and effort establishing a new route for a lesser market at this point in time instead of further expanding the already established one (which would be done with China's money, icing and cherry).
