Most Pakistanis are by default not qualified to get a credit card in Pakistan. They (read: banks) tell the commoners that an individual must have a salaried job, a sizable income, an office address, a verifiable home address and what not to get a credit card.

Pakistan is full of freelancers, small business owners and people located in places where TCS or bank verification teams can not reach, and all of them can only dream about having a credit card despite having legitimate use for it.

And this is exactly why the credit card penetration in Pakistan stands at a pathetic 0.01%.

This is changing today.

Easypaisa is now allowing its mobile app users to create MasterCard credit cards within seconds.

You just go to the Easypaisa Mobile App -> Click on Credit Cards -> Select your Validity Date, Spending Limit and that is it.

You will get a credit card in less than 10 seconds which you can use anywhere online, On AliExpress, Daraz or with Careem.

This virtual credit card can be used for any sort of transaction online or offline (where physical cards are not required for swiping) and payment will be made from your Easypaisa account.

While its real-life usages are endless, Easypaisa has made the product immensely useful; check its below features.

Salient Features:

  • You can create your own credit card within 10 seconds
  • You can set your own expiry date and spending limit
  • You can create unlimited number of cards (one for Netflix, another for hosting company and another for your younger brother) all with different expiry dates and spending limits
  • You can pause a card, i.e. to freeze it temporarily
  • You can delete any card within 2 seconds
  • There are no charges for creating a card, you will be charged from your Easypaisa account only when you will use the card for any payments online
  • Charges:
    • There are no fees for creating a card, deleting it or keeping it active
    • You will be charged only when there will be a payment made online
    • Easypaisa says that they won’t charge currency exchange fee (usually 2.5 to 3.5%)
Clarification
Technically and by definition, the above solution is a prepaid virtual debit card. We used the word credit card because it can be used online.

Considering that a lot of Pakistanis who think that basic difference between debit and credit card (other than prepaid and postpaid) is that credit cards can be used online while debit cards can’t.

Just to clear some air, this is a MasterCard and Easypaisa Powered Virtual Debit Card.

Create MasterCard Credit Card of Your Own
For this you need to have an Easypaisa account, a limitation that can be overcome very easily. Simply get an account and install its mobile app.

Once you have an Easypaisa account and mobile app installed, you will get below screen.

It tells you the account balance, options to do various operations etc on the home screen.

At the bottom right, there’s a button “Virtual Card”, click on it.

Click on “Create Another Card”

Here you select the expiry or the validity of your card. Once selected, click “Next”.

Here you select the spending limit of your choice. So for instance if you want to use this card for Netflix payments, you can set your limit at Rs. 1,000 per month to make sure that nothing is deducted beyond your expectation.

Select your limit and click “next” to get your card up and ready for usage over internet.

It will take just couple of seconds, and here you go:

You can flip the card to see CCV code.

There are “Pause” and “Deactivate/Delete” buttons available on the card that you can use to temporarily deactivate your card or to permanently delete them.

A very nifty solution. Considering easypaisa has the 2nd largest market share in terms of branchless banking in Pakistan, it will interesting to see how this will pan out. and FYI, you can use your debit card for online transactions but you gotta first call the rep. of the respective banks and after the necessary clarification, they will only allow at max 15 minutes window in which you have to complete the transaction.

.
Why don't they just introduce Visa debit. It's a debit card but can be used for online transactions. Credit is essentially a loan that you agree to pay at least partialy back every month or so.
If you don't need the extra emergency cash (credit) then Visa debit would solve all issues. I just have a credit card because i get a lot of points and canvredeem them for free stuff

that is my point how can they call it credit card do they even know what credit card means ??

.
I am using ubl internet debit card which also very easy to get and use.
I used it mostly on play store and aliexpres.
It is powered by master card that's why it can work every where.

.
Prepaid cards aren't going to help build a credit history either. So it won't help you when applying for a regular card.

.
Does PayPal operate in Pakistan?

Your point is clarified in the article:

Not yet. But we have been hearing that it will be introduced this year. So fingers crossed for that.

In the US there are a number of credit ratings agencies that does the job of calculating the credit risk of a person. It is very easier there because the banking sector penetration is almost 98%. In Pakistan, the formal banking sector caters to just 16-17% of the adult population. And the banks are pretty much happy with providing services to just this section. These guys already will have a credit history with their respective banks.
Now because of these easypaisa type services, another 12-14% population has been brought under the banking sector. These guys belong to the lower income households and are not that technologically advanced. This scheme is primarily geared for them so that they may utilize the online shopping boom in Pakistan.

Well that's good news and I'm glad to hear that for many pakistanis. As PayPal in general is very convenient.

I asked due in part to the fact that PayPal also makes available the opportunity to apply for a line of credit called "PayPal credit" formely known as "Bill Me Later"

No physical credit card, but can be used where most, if not all online merchants where PayPal is taken.

I've used it quite a few times. Especially with eBay purchases.

Of course, I'm also assuming that PayPal credit might not be available in every country that uses PayPal.

But maybe Pakistan will get both.

The same issue occurs here. Apparently $244B was charged on prepaid cards last year.

I don't know how easy it is to access prepaid MasterCards in Pakistan. Here you can buy a prepaid MasterCard or Visa at the local store in seconds. I believe there is a monthly fee though.

No doubt that the entry of PayPal will be a game changer. But for now, one can only wait and watch for its arrival.

Access is restricted to only those who have and operate banking accounts. I think this is the first foray of Master Card in the branchless banking sector in Pakistan. We'll see soon enough how the market responds to this product.
