Berlin (AFP) - German Tornado jets deployed to Syria for reconnaissance missions can't fly at night, Bild daily reported Tuesday in a new embarrassment for the defence ministry which has been battling equipment problems.

The six aircraft sent to Syria are fitted with surveillance technology, and had been touted as being capable of taking high-resolution photos and infrared images, even at night and in bad weather.

But Bild reported that night flights were impossible as pilots are blinded by the cockpit light which is far too bright.

A defence ministry spokesman admitted that there is "a small technical problem that has to do with the cockpit lighting".

"It is possible that the night goggles worn by pilots result in reflections," he said, adding that the ministry was looking at resolving the problem within the next two weeks.

He added that there was "currently no need to fly at night in Syria" and that the deployment was performing at "100 percent".

Germany's military has faced criticism in recent months over the state of its weaponry.

Its G36 assault rifle -- which is being phased out by the army -- became the butt of jokes after reports that it had trouble firing straight at high temperatures.

Der Spiegel magazine had also reported last year that only four of the military's 39 NH90 helicopters were currently useable.

Most recently, the army said the external fuel tank of one of its Eurofighter combat planes fell off as it was preparing for takeoff.

. . . .
We need to understand Germany's position though. Since it still has some guilt issues arming its armed forces properly. In Germany the military is kind of taboo, which is unfortunate.

Only because of the restrictive post war constitution leveled on the Great German Nation. One these limitations and restrictions, as well as liberal democratic policies are removed, then the Great German Nation shall rise again. Long Live German Nationalism !

My friend, this is just a minor, insignificant technical issue. It shall be resolved in days time. Until then, let's hope for a more pro-active German military policy, shall we? All of the Japanese self defense forces chiefs, i can assure you, are watching our German brothers' abilities and policy directives. With awe and inspiration. :)

Well, for the post war constitution and restrictive policies we leveled against Germany, that is long gone. We moved on long ago about Nazi Germany's past crimes. Nobody in Britain even talks/thinks about that ever again. lol It's long gone and forgotten.

In fact, we(along with France, NATO) are the one pleading/urging Germany to rearm and take more responsibilities in defending Europe and projecting power to forward our interests, instead of leaving all the burden to the U.K and France. Since we both know a strong Germany is in the interests of Europe as a whole.

It's German politicians themselves and their public who are not keen at all spending even one dime more on their military which they still view rather negatively and something to avoid if possible. lol So it's not our fault. Nothing much we can do about it.

As for your second point about liberal democratic policies, i can only say: THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Frau Merkel and German politicians proud themselves in being Europe's father Christmas/'human rights advocates'. I'ts for this reason they adopted their open door policy during the migrant crisis(and forcing other small eastern European countries to follow their lead. lol ), which caused/and is still causing chaos in Europe.:laughcry:

Don't say 'never', my English Friend. You underestimate the power of German Nationalism. I suppose that is the English propensity in tending to underestimate the German psyche. :)

No, not the 'Germans' themselves, but certain foreign state actors meddling in German internal affairs. Let's cut the bull, please.

Don't be so naive, my friend. Do you really want to engage me in discourse right now, which will split asunder your egregious and projective , infantile analysis ? :)

lol i like your optimism, however, i visit Germany very often(since i have some friends and family living/working there) i can tell you the liberal democratic policies of German political establishment wont change anytime soon. they are even far worse than our clueless liberals here in Britain. They make me admire our liberals.

So don't expect that policy of theirs to change in our lifetime. :sarcastic:

Ive been to Germany various times for seminars, and for personal pleasure, Mike. Been to Dusseldorf, Munich, throughout Bavaria, Berlin, as well as former East Prussian city of Danzig (now Polish Gadansk). Let me tell you that when i sat down with Germans on bars, as we chew the fat, the Nationalistic fervor is very much still there. Especially when they realize I am Japanese --- conversation becomes very open. :)

They make me admire our liberals.

Western Europe, in general, mon cherie, is leftist liberal. This notion of socialism and socialistic uber fraternite has always been a hallmark of Western European culture, in context to modern epoch. This concept of multiculturalism was something touted by the two foreign imperialistic powers , France and Britain. Hence the multitude of ethnic minorities in your land, presently, as it opened its borders to former colonial possessions.

So, please, don't be silly in placating on the Germans, lol.

So don't expect that policy of theirs to change in our lifetime. :sarcastic:

Only one thing is certain -- that is, nothing is certain. If this statement is true, it is also false.

...pilots are blinded by the cockpit light which is far too bright.
I know this and sympathize with our German friends. In fact, this problem became prominent with the design and increased use of 'bubble' style canopy in modern fighters.

When I was on the F-111, instrument lighting reflections were not a serious problem because of the cockpit design. When I transferred to the F-16, the issue became a problem. Not a serious one because the instrument lightings were adjustable and cockpit ergo reduced the effects.

The greater these reflections, the greater the danger of spatial disorientation and this is why our German friends do not fly at night. The Tornado is supposed to have a low altitude high subsonic attack profile and mistaking a reflected light for another aircraft could result in a fatal disaster.

Well the big holdout was France. They'd been invaded twice so they weren't too keen on Gemany reaming.
The Us and the UK have no issues.
