Anti-immigrant protests claim to want to preserve Judeo-Christian culture as critics accuse it of harbouring neo-Nazi elements

Germans take to the streets to protest against 'Islamisation' - Telegraph

A new type of anti-immigration protest is sweeping across Germany, as thousands take to the streets against what they say is the growing “Islamisation” of the country.

The new protests, which began in the city of Dresden in the former East Germany, feature no neo-Nazi slogans and have nothing to do with the traditional far right.

Instead the demonstrators have adopted the old rallying call of the protests against the East German communist regime that brought down the Berlin Wall 25 years ago, “Wir sind das Volk”, or “We are the people”. They say they want to preserve Germany’s Judeo-Christian Western culture.

The protests come as Bavaria’s ruling Christian Social Union (CSU) is seeking to distance itself from a draft proposal for its party conference which said that immigrants should speak German not only in public, but at home as well.

Germany is now the second most popular destination in the world for migrants, after the US, and the country is struggling to cope with an unprecedented influx of asylum-seekers.

While Angela Merkel’s government has made clear it will block any attempt by David Cameron to curtail freedom of movement within the EU, the German debate over immigration has focused on those coming from outside the bloc, and on Muslims in particular.

Thousands have defied sub-zero temperatures to join weekly marches each Monday in Dresden under the banner of Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of Europe, or Pegida.

The protests were started by a local man, Lutz Bachmann, with no background in politics. When he called his first demonstration in October, only a few hundred turned up, but the movement has snowballed, and last week 7,500 came.

Pegida has inspired similar movements across Germany. Though the numbers have not been as high as in Dresden so far, marches have been called in cities from Düsseldorf to Munich.

Demonstrations against Muslim immigration in Cologne earlier this year turned violent, but unlike the far-right groups and self-proclaimed “hooligans” behind those protests, Pegida insists its movement is peaceful.

It has run into opposition, though: last week a counter-demonstration by around 1,000 people succeeded in blocking Pegida’s way through Dresden, and in the city of Kassel, counter-demonstrators actually outnumbered those who marched against immigrants.

Critics contend that known neo-Nazis have infiltrated the protests, while Mr Bachmann, who has called for “zero tolerance for criminal immigrants”, was forced to acknowledge he “has a past”, after a local newspaper reported he has a lengthy criminal record of his own, including convictions for burglary and drug-dealing.

He has been at pains to stress that he is not opposed to genuine political refugees, only to economic migrants who “take advantage” of the German system, and has no problem with Islam but is worried about erosion of German culture.

Concerns for the German culture plunged Bavaria’s ruling CSU into its own controversy, after a draft proposal for the opening motion at the party conference called for immigrants to speak German at home.

“Whoever wants to live here permanently should be encouraged to speak German in public and within the family,” the draft said.

After a storm of criticism, including the Twitter hashtag YallaCSU, Arabic for “Let’s go, CSU”, and questions over how such a policy could possibly be enforced, Andreas Scheuer, the party’s general secretary, sought to limit the damage.

The proposal was only ever intended as “encouragement”, he said. “Obligation, nannying or control are out of the question.”

Hmmm..Multiculturalism coming home to roost seems like..

. . .
"Multiculturalism" only works in new countries like Canada or America where their is no historical unified culture that is challenged by alien cultures.
It's a bit too late for that, anyways what would be your solution to the problem?

This is largely characteristic of the shift in public perception across Europe in recent years-'Islamophobia' has become mainstream and has gained a level of acceptability unimaginable a decade ago. I routinely overhear my work colleagues slag off Islam and Muslims and these are respectable professionals working in the public sector where political correctness is the norm. For this I squarely blame the 'silent majority' of 'moderate muslims' in Europe who have shamelessly stood by as their faith is brazenly usurped by the Islamists...

disregard Indian trolling and sarcasm.

on a serious note. it has very little to do with multiculturalism, the public perception, islamophobia, silent majority or moderate muslims. it has more to do with the law and western ideas which arose from the renaissance that are pinned against the teachings of islam. something that comes to mind is the adhan, a call for prayers. in muslim countries this is sacred and you will hear this from loud speakers all across the country but in western countries this is not allowed for very obvious reasons.

a lot of other topics regarding freedom of speech, polygamy etc are a problem. but this debate is not unique to western countries. Islamic countries themselves have a problem with shariah. for example the state laws in pakistan do not exercise the punishment of adultery being stoned to death or the cutting of a hand for the conviction of theft.

there is a lack of synergy when it comes to state and shariah law and the idea of state being separate from religion is yet to be settled in the muslim world. of course it is taken to a whole new level when this is is put up in western democracies and that is why you see the outrage.

Btw Australia is just as much a new country as Canada or the USA yet they want nothing to do with mass immigration, multiculturalism etc.

That was 100-200 years ago. And if we're talking about the negative things Germany did 100-200 years ago, we should also look at the positive things. We're looking at the country which had been constantly pushing the boundaries in technology and science. We complain about the inhumanities our ancestors had to suffer centuries ago, yet still use the technology they produced.

A bit late. The funny thing is Many of you are converting as well. Europe will be conquered without the sword.
Is that helpful? Doesn't that type of language kind of justify the protests? Imagine if the roles were reversed how would we as Pakistanis act? Let’s not be hypocrites and respect the country we live in.

Ignore them. Let’s focus on us as a people. What you said was inflammatory. Just imagine if you were in their shoes how would you feel about the behavior of some Muslims in Western countries? Let’s try to fix our behavior rather than worry about what some Neo Nazi low life’s have to say.

It has to do with a society's education and the role their media plays. And it doesn't work in just new countries, it can work in very old and established nations as well. Sweden is probably the most immigrant friendly country in the world right now, while the other Scandinavian countries are getting there.

I'm not sure you know of the Swedish immigrant problem.

I would also be alarmed if there were immigrants actively trying to push for a completely alien set of laws in my country. Lets remind ourselves of what our countrymen do to our minorities.

immigration has become quite an issue in the recent years. immigration reform in the last US election was a pretty big issue. the justification of immigration from western perspective is primarily due to economics. immigrants provide cheap labor and are willing to take jobs that the natives will not take. on the other hand they also bring forth ideas and values that are toxic to western societies.

there is no easy or quick fix. right now in pakistan evolution is being taught in private schools, which is huge! the constitution itself defies the extremes of the shariah law. but the ideas on which western civilization is built are yet to take root in the muslim world and there is no short cut. it will take time but eventually it will bear fruit. i can vouch for myself and so many of my friends and family that have changed, but it is going to be slow. its going to take inches not miles.
