German move to reinstate border controls 'necessary': Hungarian PM | Zee News
Last Updated: Monday, September 14, 2015 - 01:39
Berlin: Hungary's hardline Prime Minister Viktor Orban welcomed Berlin's decision on Sunday to reinstate border controls as a "necessary" move to protect European values in the face of a record migrant influx.

"We have great understanding for Germany's decision and we voice our full solidarity. We understand that this decision was necessary in order to defend Germany's and Europe's values," he told Bild newspaper.

Orban said he was also convinced that "this is only the first step".

"We must also protect Europe's borders in Greece as soon as possible -- with the cohesion of Europe, all of its member states and organisations," he added.

Hungary is working around the clock to finish a controversial fence along its border with Serbia aimed at keeping migrants out.

A raft of new laws would also take effect on Tuesday with anyone crossing the border illegally liable to be deported or even jails.

"If Germany carries out border controls, Austria must put strengthened border controls in place," Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mitterlehner told a joint news conference with Chancellor
Austria announced on Monday it would dispatch the armed forces to guard its southern frontier, following Germany's lead in re-imposing Europe's internal border controls after thousands of migrants streamed across its frontier from Hungary on foot.

Austrian officials said they were left with no choice after Germany's decision on Sunday, which effectively suspends Europe's two-decade old Schengen regime allowing border-free travel across the continent.

"If Germany carries out border controls, Austria must put strengthened border controls in place," Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mitterlehner told a joint news conference with Chancellor Werner Faymann. "We are doing that now."

He and Mr. Faymann said the army would be deployed in a supporting role.

"The focus of the support is on humanitarian help," Mr. Faymann said. "But it is also, and I would like to emphasise this, on supporting border controls where it is necessary."

Before the announcement, migrants were walking across the border from Hungary at the fastest rate yet. Police said they were running out of emergency accommodation, including tented camps near the border and the car parks of railway stations.

An Austrian police spokesman said that by mid-morning, 6,000 to 7,000 people had arrived since midnight, after 14,000 on Sunday.

The European Union has been struggling to cope with the unprecedented arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants, many refugees fleeing war in the Middle East. Nearly all arrive at the bloc's southern and eastern edges and head over land to seek asylum in richer states further north and west.

The Schengen system, established in 1995, removes all border checks between 26 European states, but the rules still bar undocumented migrants from travelling. Countries are permitted to re-impose border checks temporarily in emergencies.

Illegal travel across internal Schengen borders by migrants has become a major issue in recent weeks, especially after Berlin suspended normal EU asylum policy to announce it would take Syrian refugees who arrive elsewhere in the European Union.

Austria has served as the main conduit for refugees heading to Germany from the EU's land border in Hungary. It suspended its rail link to Hungary last week because of what the national rail company called a "massive overburdening" of its network.

Germany and Austria acted in unison more than a week ago to lift restrictions on the entrance of migrants from Hungary. But Berlin's decision on Sunday to reverse course appeared to catch the Austrian government by surprise. At a hastily convened news conference on Sunday night, Mr. Faymann and Mr. Mitterlehner had given no clear indication as to whether Austria would reintroduce checks.

"The accommodation centres in Nickelsdorf, Parndorf, and in the near surroundings are all full," the police spokesman said, referring to the area near the border crossing where almost all migrants have arrived from Hungary recently.

"At the moment, no buses are running," he said. "The only buses that are running are taking people to the station until a special train leaves, but otherwise we have no accommodation at the moment."

A train service was running to Vienna, and buses had taken people to other parts of the country overnight, the police spokesman said, adding that the number of people entering south of the main crossing point was growing.

At Heiligenkreuz, where until recently only dozens of migrants had crossed each day, arrivals had reached 1,000 to 2,000 on Sunday, in addition to those counted at the main crossing, he said. More were expected on Monday.

Hungary PM sends nearly 900 new policemen to defend border | Zee News

Budapest: Hungary`s Prime Minister Viktor Orban directed hundreds of new policemen to the southern border with Serbia on Monday to help manage record numbers of refugees and migrants trying to enter the European Union.

Police rounded up 5,809 people on the border on Sunday, bringing the number of illegal border crossings to 191,702 this year as tens of thousands of people, many fleeing Syria`s civil war, trek up through the western Balkans towards Germany.

"You will meet with people who have been deceived. You will be met with temper and aggression," Orban told new officers he inaugurated on Monday, calling on police to be humane but enforce the law in an "uncompromising" manner.

As of Tuesday, Hungarian authorities will receive and start processing asylum requests at the border and transport those who apply by bus to camps elsewhere in the country.

Those migrants who refuse to cooperate will be kept at the border, and those who cross the border illegally, trying to avoid police, face arrest and possible imprisonment.

"The new rules to take effect from tomorrow will strengthen the protection of Hungarian borders," Orban told the policemen gathered in one of Budapest`s main squares.

A government website said 868 new officers were inaugurated at the ceremony.

Orban said the scale of migration required new policemen to start work before finishing their studies to defend Hungarian sovereignty and the local way of life.

Police said Hungarian authorities have opened new temporary reception centres in the western towns of Kormend and Szentgotthard.

A Reuters photographer in Roszke on the southern border with Serbia said thousands of migrants were being taken by trains towards the border with Austria.

Lithuania's Linkevičius hopes German border controls won't trigger Schengen collapse - EN.DELFI
Monday, September 14, 2015
Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius expressed hope that the border control introduced by Germany would not trigger "chain reactions" that would destroy the Schengen zone. Lithuania's Linkevičius hopes German border controls won't trigger Schengen collapse © Reuters/Scanpix The minister suggested that Berlin might have to revise its policies of opening doors to all refugees.

"I would never wish or expect any chain reactions, especially since it is based on emotions. In this case, this is about the flows that are not under control," the minister told journalists at the government on Monday. "Germany had given a sort of an invitation – we can say this and use this word – to come to Germany, so that all of the refugees were heard, however, the results now require revising the invitation," Linkevičius added.

On Sunday, Germany decided to resume control of its borders, thus admitting its incapacity to handle the record flow of refugees.

Protecting the Anglo-Saxon European values of Human Rights and democracy etc. of course.

That is, first of all bomb the nations to stone age, plunder their resources and once they start running for their lives, blame them for everything and make sure you shut your doors on them.

WOW!

Why the f* did they have to bomb Libya, Syria etc to safeguard "Human Rights" of those people living over there who went on with their lives and did not give tiny rats ar$e about that?

Now after destroying their lives (i.e. giving them their "human rights") the West is giving them more "human rights" by making sure they die in the sea, in the cold and so on.

I am not sure, I understand this world anymore.

Poland stands ready to impose border controls: PM Kopacz| Reuters

Poland is ready to impose controls at its borders with other European Union members in case of any threats to border security, Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz said on Monday.

She also said she told European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that Poland would not agree automatic quotas for accepting migrants and that Warsaw demands a strengthening of controls at EU's external borders.

"As soon as I receive (any) notification of any threat (to border security), Poland will start controlling its borders," Kopacz told reporters. "We will accept only as many refugees as we can afford, not a single one more or less," she said.

Troops in Europe should brace for new border checks

By Andrew Tilghman , Staff writer 11:28 a.m. EDT September 16, 2015

As some European countries rebuild and fortify their border crossings to keep out refugees, U.S. troops in Europe should expect travel disruptions and should remember to have their passports in pocket if traveling across national borders, U.S. officials say.

Several countries, including Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Slovakia, have revived some border checkpoints that vanished years ago with European Union integration.

The countries are responding to the migration of thousands of refugees, many fleeing civil war in Syria that is now in its fifth year.

The U.S. Embassy in Berlin issued a statement Monday warning that "the ongoing refugee situation in the region may cause disruptions at some border crossings and on land transportation networks. Official checkpoints may be set up on normally open border crossings with other countries, borders may be temporarily closed, or road and rail travel may be halted with little or no warning."

U.S. military commands in Europe maintain standing guidance that troops should carry their passports when crossing borders, regardless of whether the crossing points typically feature an official checkpoint.

"Just as one is required to carry a driver's license while driving although it may not be checked, the same applies for carrying a passport when crossing European country borders, even when there are no checkpoints," according to the U.S. Army Europe website.

"Federal police in some European countries have the right to pull vehicles over without suspicion of wrongdoing simply to check passports," the USAREUR guidance states.

"Some countries that are members of the European Union's Schengen zone allow EU citizens to cross their borders freely without a passport; however the agreement does not extend to U.S. or other non-EU citizens."

According to preliminary information, three Iraqi men were transporting seven fellow nationals to Finland. Over the past 10 days, this is the fourth case when trips of Iraqi migrants to Finland is interrupted at the Lithuanian border with Poland, the State Border Guard Service said. The seven Iraqis without papers will be returned to Poland, the country from which they crossed into Lithuania.

The three men who were driving them, who had proper travel documents, face criminal charges. Previously, on 7 September, Lithuania's border guards stopped a car driven by a 37-year-old Iraqi national who had Finnish residency documents. Four undocumented men were discovered in the car and its truck.

The passengers, who claimed to be from Iraq, were returned to Poland, from whence they came. They driver was detained in Lithuania. Last Saturday, Lithuanian border guards apprehended one more car that crossed from Poland. The driver, 35-year-old Iraqi, had Finnish residency permit. So did a 27-year-old passenger.

However, three more people without documents were discovered in the car. On that same day, two more migrants without documents were stopped crossing the Lithuanian-Polish border by foot. The two men, who said they were from Iraq, had certificates issued by the Macedonian migration service. Both were sent back to Poland.

Lithuania steps up patrols on Polish border due to illegal migrants - EN.DELFI

Lithuania has stepped up patrol on its border with Poland after spotting a new refugee route from Southern Europe to Scandinavia, and has also taken other undisclosed measures, Renatas Požėla, head of the country's State Border Guard Service, said in an interview with BNS on Thursday. Lithuania steps up patrols on Polish border due to illegal migrants © VSAT "The flows are changing and new directions are turning up.

Earlier, the direction was from the East to the West along our external border, and we used to mainly have problems with Vietnamese citizens. And now we have the South-North direction. We are analyzing the situation and directing our forces to and taking measures where they are most needed, including the Lithuanian-Polish border. There are currently definitely no decisions to resume internal border controls, but we are stepping up our capabilities taking into account the existing situation. I wouldn’t want to elaborate as it has to do with the service secret," the border guards' chief said.

"The stepped-up controls are only one of the forms but there are also other forms, including information collection. So we have taken action in several directions and certain things are invisible," Požėla said. Four groups of Iraqi migrants have been detained in Lithuania in the the last ten days. They entered the country from Poland and were travelling to Scandinavian countries.

Požėla is currently in Greece, where he is observing a Frontex mission on the Island of Lesbos, which is some 20 kilometres from the Turkish coast. "The situation is tough: about 3,000 refugees arrive in the island each day," Požėla told BNS. "Today, I was flying in a helicopter and, over the course of four hours, we spotted 19 boats, each of them carrying on average 40 people. There's essentially no control: these people land on the coast and set off on the routes they know. They head for the registration centres where they are issued certificates [...] with which they then travel on to Europe." Požėla says the island of 90,000 people currently hosts some 7,000 refugees, while during the peak there were 15,000.

The European Commission said it saw no violation in such a decision.

Slovakia announced a similar decision later.

Austria tightened controls at the border with Hungary on September 16. Slovenia introduced border controls on September 17.
