In joint USAF-Luftwaffe exercises, the MiG-29 that the Luftwaffe fielded defeated the F-16 in close combat almost every time using its highly practical IRST sensor and helmet mounted display, together with the Vympel R-73 (NATO: AA-11 'Archer') missiles

The Federation of American Scientists claims the MiG-29 is superior to the F-15 and other US fighters in short aerial engagements because of the Helmet Mounted Weapons Sight (HMS) and better maneuverability. This has been proven when MiG-29s of the German Luftwaffe participated in joint DACT exercises with U.S. fighters. German pilots constantly won close-in dogfights. The HMS was a great part of the success, allowing the Germans to achieve a lock on any target the pilot could see within the missile field of view, including those almost 45 degrees off boresight. In contrast, the U.S. aircraft were only able to lock onto targets in a narrow window directly in front of the aircraft’s nose. It was not until late 2003 that the USAF and US Navy achieved Initial Operational Capability of the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System.

And more over why go for all the same fighter that your neighbor have?

German are not like american or poms- who are made fighters. These buggers are born fighters. this small air force they have can bugger scare Americans or Russians or anybody we all know what these buggers are made of and deadly combination of smart brain with will of lion!
But hey they have sold all these fighters to polish air force.

Germany's Mig 29s were all sold to Poland for the symbolic price of 1 Euro each

Former Luftwaffe Mig-29s would have their work cut out in front of them against similarly equipped F-16s (with JHMCS as an example). You cannot match up two equally performing aircraft but then give one the benefit of HMS and HOBS AAM and other using conventional Frontal aspect (AIM-9L) Missiles and then call it an even match.

As far as pilots are concerned, both USAF and Luftwaffe have some very excellent pilots. You look back historically at least and you will find that for every German ace (during lets say WWI and WWII), there was at least an American pilot who also was an ace.

We certainly had aces and our guys knew their aircraft well. Germans, though, flew until they died or were crippled out of the cockpit. As a result, they had some stupid-crazy kill numbers.

Time in cockpit, great aircraft in the FW190 and ME 109, and a lot of Soviet pilots and aircraft thoroughly unprepared for this professionalism led to these huge numbers.

Sadly we don't fly the MiG-29 fulcrum in the luftwaffe anymore... we (foolishly) sold them all to poland in 2006 for a euro a piece.
However I don't know why this is shocking to you, the MiG-29 fulcrum is an excellent and manuverable fighter. we inherited them from the air force of the former german democratic republic (east Germany) and upgraded and used them for years. we mainly fly the eurofighter typhoon and Panavia tornado at the moment.
