CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu police on Monday arrested a 50-year-old German national who allegedly raised funds for protests against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant.

Tamil Nadu 'Q' branch sleuths, who monitor the activities of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the state, arrested Sonnteg Reiner Hermann in Nagercoil on Monday. They brought him to Chennai in the evening. Immigration officials said they have cancelled Hermann's visa and that he would be deported early on Tuesday.

Police sources said Hermann had come to India on a tourist visa. The arrest comes close on the heels of the anti-nuke protestors threatening to sue PM Manmohan Singh for telling a journal that Indian NGOs were getting funds from the US and western Europe to stall the construction of the Russia-aided Kudankulam nuclear reactor.

Acting on a tip-off from the Centre, the 'Q' branch conducted surprise checks at a lodge in Nagercoil and picked up Hermann for questioning. They searched his room and found evidence that he had been mobilising funds for the anti-nuclear activists, an officer said.

"We had been watching his movements and found that he was sourcing funds for activists in Tamil Nadu. We collected Hermann's mobile phone call details

and found that he was in touch with Lalmohan, a close aide of Udayakumar who is leading the anti-nuclear agitation in Kudankulam," the officer said.

MoS in the PMO V Narayanasamy said the Centre had cancelled licenses of three NGOs in south Tamil Nadu. "These NGOs have violated the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act and therefore their licenses have been cancelled. They did not maintain proper accounts and did not use funds for the purposes they were meant for," Narayanasamy said.

Central agencies are also probing the activities of some NGOs that receive funds from the US and Scandinavian countries and are spending huge amounts on the anti-Kudankulam agitation.

TN cops arrested Sonnteg Reiner Hermann from Nagercoil for mobilising funds for the anti-nuclear activists. Cops said his phone call records revealed he was in constant touch with a close aide of Udayakumar, who is leading the Kudankulam agitation.

Germans fund anti-Kudankulam activities for anti-Russian agenda?

.
in a democracy people are arrested or banned from protest? what is this?
irrespective of where the funds are coming from, they believe that a nuclear plant is not in the best interest of the locals and want to do something about it, why simply cut off the protests rather than addressing the concerns of the people?

He was in India on a tourist visa and should not be indulging in NGO related work. Try going to Germany on a tourist visa and work there and see what the authorities over there do to you.

Protesters are not being banned from protesting, the inciters (foreign NGOs) who are. Russian is building Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh. Its very close to the most densely populated regions of India, do you see any NGO in India or Foreign NGO protesting about that? Just because its a separate country divided by a man made border, there are no risks from that Nuclear Plant?

These NGO's are hindering the progress of the country and keeping the ignorant population ignorant. Its the same case in Orissa with the multi billion posco deal and same problems with new mines in Jharkhand.

German national deported for allegedly funding protests against Kudankulam N-plant

Sonnteg Reiner Hermann, the German national, had close links with Udhayakumar who is spearheading protests against the nuclear plant. The tip-off came from Central agencies.

Sonnteg was under surveillance and the police say they have telephone records based on which they took the action.

The police also searched Sonnteg's hotel room before he was sent back to Germany.

Enjoy your trip back home!

WELL,let me be brutally honest,TN,being one of the most industrialized state of india is facing one of itz worst power shortages, and it can be attributed to the delaying of two VVER-1000 assemblies,i hate to say this, but all the protesters in my opinion should be shot ,i mean, these protectors dont know a single god damn thing about the technical aspect of VVER-1000 and spare no chance in protesting...they go on lengths to establish a connection between the VVER-1000 with fukushima and chernobyl, but they miserably fail to understand that, fukushima's reactor was technologically inferior to the VVER-1000 series of reactors...
and secondly, there is NO comparision between chernobyl and kudamkulam because the type of reactor installed at chernobyl, was RBMK-1000,it is class of reactor which is graphite moderated and is a bit unstable when run at low power output,it had (unfortunately) a lil bit positive temperature coefficient(as opposed to the '-ve' coefficient of most PWRs) which meant, the reactor would go horrendously outta control if even slight control is lost

.
we must always keep in mind that, nuclear energy is the future...,when china is going ahead with their 1000mw class PWRs,and india with itz 700mw PHWRs,there is nothing which can propel india in 21st century...india has achieved mastery in constructing small(100-300mw class) and mid sized(550-700mw) class of PWRs...and,india too happens to be a "leader" in FBR(fast breeder reactor) technology, the chairman of NPCIL,recently stated that they are planning to commercialize their reactors...
i am sure, with a few years say like 40-50 years when the stock of uranium will be exhausted, the whole world would have to inevitably turn towards thorium, hence R&D into FBR is essential for all countries..

This over-worshipping of democracy is what is slowing our nation down. You need to differentiate between practicality and threats to national development. Democracy is not a panacea to everything and sometimes it itself is an obstacle to development. If this is the case, then democracy should be removed from certain sections of our polity where development and national growth is important.
