CJ Iftikahr issued the 5th licence to Geo/ Jang group against the law and prescribed limit and when that fact was flagged to him he got pissed off. CJ Iftikhar acted as the sharp end for the "freedom of expression" in Pakistan during his reign.

sorry to use the overused expression .. Geo had it coming. ... but this is all temporary. PMLn is its open supporter so it will revive it and when Geo will come back it will come with a Bang.

Nope. This was a Karachi Local Complaints Committee making its recommendation. This is NOT a decision by PEMRA.

oh ho - that is what i went - but this committee was formed by PEMRA for the said matter in Question, so it is authorized to make such decision ----

Interestingly The Independent media group has two licences to its name. Geo News and Geo Entertainment (M/s Independent Media Corporation (Pvt.) Ltd). Two separate organizations own the other three. Geo Taiz and Geo Kahani is licenced to (
M/s Independent Newspapers Corporation (Pvt.) Ltd) and Geo Super is licenced to M/s Independent Music Group (SMC-Private)

So technically they have played safe....
Furthermore, when the group sought the licence for Geo Super in 2009, the PEMRA refused the grant of licence, not by sighting the reason that the limit of licences was exceeded, but the failure to obtain "security clearance" from Ministry of Interior.

Briefly stated facts of the case are that as back as on 2
nd July,
2007, the petitioners submitted an application to the respondent No.2 for issuance of licence to establish & operate Satellite TV broadcast channel station, under Rule 6 of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Ordinance, 2002 [hereinafter referred to as ‘the Ordinance, 2002’] for a period of 15 years i.e. period permissible to avail such licence. Admittedly this application remained pending and the PEMRA failed to decide the same within the period of 100 days as required
under Section 22 of the Ordinance, 2002. However, after passing of a considerable period, on 08.07.2009 it refused to grant licence due to “security clearance” not given by Ministry of Interior. Contents of the letter are reproduced herein below:-

“2. It is informed that the Authority in its 55th meeting held on 3rd July, 2009 has refused the award of satellite TV licence to M/s Independent Music Group (SMC-PVT) due to regret of security clearance by Ministry of Interior, which is obligatory under Rule 10(iv) of PEMRA Rules for issuance of licence.”

There is no decision as of yet, merely a recommendation, which has no legal standing.
