Geo News on the verge of a complete BAN

Unfortunately, even anti-establishment media agencies have their place. They're the ones that usually keep the government and those in power in check.

Pakistan is a special case, the problems it faces and the power structure mandates a subservient media.... You dont want arab spring type situation with people against the establishment, so it is better for media outlets to tow the national rhetoric...

There is no enforceable way to make media tow the official line given the modern tools of communication.

No intention to ban Jang and Geo: Nawaz - thenews.com.pk

LONDON: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday that his government had no intention of banning Geo and the Jang Group as requested by the Ministry of Defence.

Asked by The News about the attempts by some quarters to persecute Geo and the Jang Group, Nawaz Sharif said that the media was playing a positive role in Pakistan and there was every reason for an independent media such as Jang and Geo to continue functioning without any forcible shutdowns.

The prime minister said that since he came to power, his government had not imposed any kind of restrictions on the media and it believed in the freedom of expression.

Asked about the application seeking a ban on Geo and the Jang Group through Pemra, the premier said that a Judicial Commission had been formed to look into various aspects of the developments surrounding the attack on Hamid Mir. The premier stressed that the commission was the right forum to look into various aspects of the incident.

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”

Funny. I would view that as an apt description of Geo network and Express Tribune.

I agree that the security establishment in Pakistan is an elitist club at times, and there have been transgressions, but it is also wrong to blame them for everything that ails Pakistan.

On the media front, there are responsible media organizations in Pakistan which hold the establishment's feet to the fire while also serving the national interest. DAWN would be among the finest examples of that. Much as I disagree with their tone sometimes, few would deny that they have Pakistan's best interests at heart.

The same can not be said of Geo and Express Tribune. These media outlets are utterly devoid of merit and intellectual honesty. This is a subjective, personal assessment, of course, but each citizen has to decide for themselves if they see the media organizations as serving the national interests, or purely self-serving sensationalist tripe.

In any case, I don't believe in banning them and turning them into martyrs. The better approach is for viewers who disagree to boycott them.

...... I have never seen BBC and CNN bashing either UK or US intelligence.....
UK or US intelligence personnel never tried to kill any member/employee of BBC or CNN.....
The continuous attacks on Geo TV employees indicate that they enjoy much less freedom than their counterparts in Britain or USA.....
IMHO, not only Geo but all members of the Pakistani media collectively must protest against such attacks on Journalists because if they keep quiet now, next will be their turn......

Freedom of Speech in Pakistan is at stake....."According to Amnesty International’s research, at least 34 journalists may have been killed as a direct consequence of their work since democratically-elected government was restored in March 2008.
Only in one case have the perpetrators been convicted, the 2011 killing of Geo TV correspondent Wali Khan Babar, and even in this case there were serious concerns about fair trial issues."

I dont think ban is a good idea. It will kill the moral argument opponents of Goe have, including myself. Better plan is to do reforms in media regulatory laws. But Nawaz who has been completely silent on this issue does not seem to be in any mood to these reforms. Right now it seems PMLN is defending Geo by choosing to be silent on this issue.

Hiring a gun to attack someone to make it look its an extremist attack is so simple these days. On what authority can Amnesty or any other foreign agency say that this was ISI or taliban driven attack? Honestly, everyone these days is either taliban or ISI.

ISI is not in business of killing journalists. Keep your bullshit to your self. ISI has its hands full and is doing important job of national security. Killing a journalist makes him significant.

No such evidence exists that ISI or Army is behind such attack. Geo is being criticised by all the other news groups and TV channels for poor reporting so dont know WTH are you talking about here. Journalists are being targeted by TTP and some parties like MQM. Unless you can provide evidence for your claim untill then you are just another indian trolling around maligning pakistani defense institutions.

All innocent people killed every day, so can we blame ISI for that?. Without proof you can't be a judge and asked any institution head to resign. If it is correct then i put blame on Indian PM and asked PM to resign because he is the one behind Mr. Mir attack and he is supporting International terror(which is not true) and next 8 hours i will continuously stated the same. And yes i don't blame on India for that but PM must be resign.

Its a shame that for Pakistanis some institutions are more important than the country itself. Geo caused Pakistan's repute a crushing blow post Mumbai fiasco(by proudly claiming to be the first channel to have tracked down kasabs village), however nobody acknowledged Geo's treachery at that time or even raised concerns over Geo's antics. For acting against national interests and fracturing national prestige, Geo should have been banned ages ago.

Do you mean like the ISI? No single institution can claim to be more important than Pakistan itself.

.
Why Pakistan allow GEO media at first place before? Didn't our authorities know that Geo media is Pro-India long years?

.
GEO should be banned and Army or ISI should open a news channel.

Yes or even Army for that matter...........for Pakistanis, Pakistan should be the priority, not institutions or political figures.

Exactly. No one is a sacred cow never to be touched. Everybody needs to play their assigned part correctly, legally, and with the required sense of duty. Everybody.
