100 Days and Counting: Glimpses of the Lockdown, Shutdown in Kashmir
Photographs taken over the past three months while reporting from different parts of Kashmir narrate their own story.

Srinagar: Today, November 12, marks the completion of 100 days of lockdown and shutdown in Kashmir following the dilution of Article 370 and bifurcation of the state on August 5.

The state-enforced siege on the lives of the people of Kashmir began in the summer. It remains intact as the winter begins. Officially intended for the ‘protection’ of lives but actually designed to instill fear and submission, the siege has choked not just the freedom of expression, communication and association but also the economy. No aspect of daily life remains unaffected.

The markers of the siege are visible everywhere – a censored press, more bunkers, longer military convoys, soldiers atop military vehicles, standing guard on either side of the road with batons and guns in their hands, bringing civilian traffic to an abrupt halt; coils of concertina wires and road blockades occupying virtually all main roads and crossings.

The communications blockade – access to the internet has been barred since the night of August 4 – the voluntary shutdown, protests, growing anger, dispossession, humiliation, and loss, all of this has cumulated into dark clouds of despondency hovering over the valley in the past three months. Uncertainty pervades the air. The passage of time has only added to the gloom. There are no clearer answers, especially about when this abnormal situation will end. On New Delhi-based TV channels, however, normalcy has long since returned in Kashmir.

And yet, despite all the restrictions and the denial of basic rights to communicate and express views freely online and offline, the will to survive and defy is visible everywhere. What an old man from Anchar in the Soura locality of Srinagar told a fact-finding team of lawyers, activists and trade union leaders from different states that recently visited the Valley aptly sums up the popular mood:

“We have been using a shawl for all these years to cover our bodies. There are several, maybe 10 holes in it. Yet we have been using the same shawl. There is today an 11th hole in it and we will continue wearing the shawl,” the man was quoted in the report “Imprisoned Resistance” released last month by the team in New Delhi.

The photographs I took with my phone over the past three months while reporting from different parts of Kashmir narrate their own story. The images also provide a glimpse of what the much propagated ‘normalcy’ means for the people of Kashmir.

How long will the wait be?

Imran Khan told us to wait for his call for jihad on Kashmir.

There is complete silence on Kashmir by GoP and PEMRA is being used by GoP to censor massive protests by Pakistanis for their Kashmiri brethren.

IOK has to install a defacto Kashmir govt based in pakistan---from there---the movement will start---.

. . .
I mentioned IOK---indianoccuipied kashmir---. They have to star a movement---place a defacto govt and build an army---

How?

Movement is already there. The numbers are there to have enough peacetime army.

How do you propose it can be done?

Having Pakistan Muslim League's government of Kashmir pass a resolution in her assembly? Current political leadership of Kashmiris in IoK can be there.

Fully agreed with @MastanKhan suggestion about Hurriat leadership has to push the initiative and take the political and legal step by formation of a defacto government representing IOK.

That will help legitimize armed freedom fighters and make way for even formation of a defacto Armed wing.

And you have a flash point turning red hot in an LOC between IOK and Azad Kashmir, the HQ of Hurriats armed wing rather than a "aap he chal se tay thuss kar si" attitude.

Imran Khan told us to wait for his call for jihad on Kashmir.
Didn't you hear what IK said on his return from UNGA at Islamabad Airport? He said it right there and then as promised.

Do you want him to be anymore clearer than that or submit a hand written application to FATF himself???

He declared jihad But no one came from Canada to take part as promised.

A struggle is on, let's support it instead of sitting on our @rse and bickering about it blaming IK at every opportunity.

Isn't there a Azad Kashmir govt representing kashmir state?

EVen if they make new 'Kashmir Govt' and recruit men to fight Jihad, they still hv to cross LOC for that, the same thing they have been doing since long.

In 1971, India not only creating Mukhti Bahini Guerrillas, it also jumped amidst the freedom struggle and started the war, till then Mukhti Bahini was getting wiped out with it's members caught and eliminated. After India forces joined in, defeated Pakistani forces in East Pakistan liberation war and they surrendered, then only independent Bangadesh came out.

1.Pakistan military must take the initiate to start a war with India , if it wants to garner biggere support of local Kashmirs to joins it's in the freedom struggle.

2. The feign that only if India commits larger scale genocide ,Pakistan military will interfere is merely excuse to avoid military confrontation with India.

3. Pakistan military is doing 'zubbani jamakharch or since Aug 5 and ISPR milking 27th airal encounter to pacify it's own people.

4. IK statements warning against Jihad and PA inaction hv created a lot of disaffection in 'occupied' Kashmir for Pakistan.

5. Lastly, the most informant thing, if there is no intention to fight a full scale war for Kashmir , in both India and Pakistan shd stop LOC firings which only damages property of local Kashmiris on both sides of the border and causes pointless loss of lives of young boys from the both the armies .

I think Pakistan's military objective are not being complimented by the polity and soon that will change too.

Major escalation is expected on the LoC and IB in coming months

Spot on...This is the same response that i gave to another person in another thread...If Pakistan is not ready to fight a direct war with India at this juncture, then what is the point in making ordinary kashmir citizen fight with massive Indian forces and get them killed??
