Generals curse upon country: Nawaz Sharif

http://www.paktribune.com/news/index.shtml?178978

LONDON: Former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, has said that Generals have always been a curse upon the country.

"Every coup has ended in catastrophe," he said in an interview here on Tuesday. "Musharraf has reduced this parliament to a rubber stamp. It has no powers and can be sacked by uniformed generals anytime. He has tampered with the constitution. Now, it`s the judiciary`s turn -- no wonder there is chaos on the streets."

He said violence has been on the rise ever since Musharraf usurped power as parties in tribal Balochistan hate Musharraf because he used the army to murder their popular leader Nawab Bugti in broad daylight in August last year, he maintained.

He pointed out while answering a query, Pro-Taliban groups hate him because he supports the US-led war in the region. Finally, almost all political parties in the country hold him responsible for the recent riots and deaths in Karachi. The situation is bound to worsen.

Commenting on present violence across due to which at least on hundred people have been killed since March 9 after suspension of Chief Justice, he said, the present movement must evolve into a major uprising due to policies of the government.

Referring to democracy, he said, "Bhutto and I don`t merely want to restore democracy, but strengthen it in such a way that the army returns, once and for all, to its barracks, keeps its hands off politics and respects the constitution of Pakistan."

"She admitted on television that she was in touch with Musharraf but said there was no deal. Our joint Charter clearly says there can be no dialogue with army dictators. I, for my part, have adhered to it." he noted.

Regarding the question with US relation, he said, "I had a good relationship with former President Bill Clinton without offering him any guarantees. I don`t need to offer Mr. Bush any either. We will fight others` battles only if we are ideologically committed ourselves. But the US and all foreign powers should note: If you continue to support one individual, you will alienate 160 million Pakistanis thirsting for democracy."

160 million Pakistanis thirsting for democracy
:mod: If I'm in the count than I dare to correct the sweeping figure of 160 million as: 159,999,999.00 :mod:

And I remember him giving away Kargil for having a photo session with Bill Clinton.

Generalisimo said the Uniform is his second skin.
Ha ha ha, it's his only skin!

Other generals and majority of Pakistanis know him as leader and savior of Pakistan. :police:

this is so funny that the man who came to power under the influence of the most " crazy Islamic" generall is now blaming the generals for not having democracy in Pakistan. This is without a doudt the most stupid politician ever.

Not stupid, Nawaz just likes to be all powerful. If you remember the tape of conversation between Jang group chief and Sen Saif ur Rahman. This was produced in court when Nawaz Sharif govt stopped News Print allocation to Jang.

Saif ur Rahman gave a long list of journalists which Nawaz wanted removed from the staff as these were considered anti govt. Saif Rahman, then Chief of NAB, said ( if I remember correctly) " We have fixed the Chief Justice, we fixed the Army Chief and we fixed the President. If you dont do as we say, WE WILL FIX YOU."

On refusal, govt accused Jang group of selling part of their allocation of newsprint in the black market and stopped their quota. For a couple of months Jang paper was being published with less than half the normal pages. Jang group eventually won their case.

Nawaz also appopinted his lap dog; an Engineering Corps man as new Army Chief because he wanted to be totally in control. There has to be a reason why NS had problems with the four Arny Chiefs. It is a hard to swallow that Gen Asif ( who died while excercising),Gen Kakar. Gen Karamat and Gen Musharraf were all wrong and only NS is in the right.

Human nature never ceases to amaze me; how politicians change their stance once they are in opposition. A very old saying " Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" can be applied to every leader in Pakistan including the civilians such as Z A Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.

IMO there is something basically wrong with Pakistan pysche. No sooner a new leader comes into power ( whether military or civilian), all those not in power try to topple the government. This hasnot stopped in my lifetime and doubt it will stop after Musharraf. What is to be done ?? I wish I knew. One thing is certain, somebody up there likes Pakistan and whenever Pakistan's economy is in dire trouble, international scene changes and we get help from Uncle Sam to tide us over a decade or so. My belief in Allah has been reinforced.

But you lost the wider view, Niaz, Z A Bhotto was toppled by General a Dictator called Zia, Nawaz government was topled by General a Dicatator called Musharraf. Looking at both cases there were power hungery generals here who wanted power. You should consider that military regimes will never make progress they will destroy what hold the government and make more corrupts( a good example is MQM it was created by Zia). The government of the past the government of NS is still in power all the Parlimentarians are of PML(n) who were power hungery and joined Musharraf PML(Q) it makes so much sense who was really power hungry.

Z A Bhutto tried to stop these hungry generals to not to come in Politics his stratagy. He created the Joint Chief of staff and he wanted to add more protection for the state he also made the ranger a civilian army. He wanted to add stability more to the government power, however, Dictator Zia did not want this.

If there is a problem with the Pakistani Politics, then it is to do with generals who are power hungery, they have created this instability in Pakistan. To stop them dont support them never let them feel they are important in Government politics. Pakistan can only grow if there is civilian rule and not Dictatorship. It is a proven fact in history dictators never make progress but give the opposite.

Perhaps I failed to make my point clear. ZAB removed 50 generals calling them 'Bonapartist' but he chose Zia ul Haq because he thought he could control him. Zia did topple him but only after 6 months of rioting had left the whole country in tatters after Bhutto rigged elections in 1976 to give himself 2/3 majority. I experienced it first hand because I was there. There were weeks of strikes in all the major cities.

First there was Nizame - Mustafa movement, once ZAB gave in and announced Islamization this movement fizzled out. All poilitical parties then combined to form PNA ( Pakistan National Alliance) with the sole aim of toppling ZAB. Guess who organised PNA - erstwhile Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan.

On his side ZAB made seven ammendments in the constitution, banned NAP ( who changed name to ANP), dissolved elected NWFP and Baluchistan governments and carried on a long and bloody war against the Baluchis. ZAB also created FIA to take care of his political opponents.

Zia could only take over because there was enough dissatifaction in PA due to ZAB actions and after one Lt Col refused to open fire on demonstrators in Lahore.

Similarly there was strong resentment against Nawaz Sharif after he attacked Supreme court, engineered removal of CJ, removed an elected President and installed his lap dog as President, fired Jehangir Karamat and hand picked Musharraf. ( Why not Ali Quli Khan ??) then also wanted to remove Musharraf in a very cowardly manner.

In both cases, opposition parties were initially happy that an elected govt was toppled. Do you still think that problem only lies with the generals ( Hand picked by the poiliticians) and the political leaders are innocent victims ?? I would say that both are equally to blame.

I repeat my assertion that power corrupts and in Pakistan's case civilian leaders are even more prone to the misuse of power. Situation becomes so bad that populace in general including opposition political leaders welcome 'Coup detat' with open arms. I rest my case.

To every politician who ever supported a military regime he is a terror in there minds and hearts. The fiction that he rigged the elections is another mean to shut him up, Zia held elections again but still he won what does that tell you, 76 and 77 both elections were won by Zulfikar. The demise of Pakistan lay in the hands of generals who broke the country and then another fiction starts Zulfikar broke the country in to two pieces cries from the generals he will take our power away. He is a struggle a notion that grew and kept Pakistan strong if it all it meant that, Zia was the hero, what did he do for the country other than call him self a president for nearly decade and a half. Perhaps u should remember how they accused Zulfikar for political murder, Perhaps it is best to say it was Zia who pushed the CJ to go against Zulfikar. Zulfikar lives on and he can’t be erased from history, he rose as high as a mountain and spoke poniards and each word stabbed the Landlords who ruined Pakistan, he wanted landlord to give the land back to the government so that poor could also live on the supplements of what they grew. Because of powerful opposition that rose from the landlords, they wanted this pillar of stability to go.

Zulfikar was given this task to create the constitution he had the choice either to make the constitution himself or be honourable and let the constitution be created by all. He created the constitution by the favour and elected members of the people of Pakistan. He never rose against the constitution, however, Zia did rise against it he betrayed Pakistan and left the country in shambles.

Nawaz was led by the same generals who got BB ousted, he took rush and kicked those generals out so that they don’t interfere in his power. Niaz who was behind the Kargil war was it Nawaz or was it Musharraf? It was Musharraf who wanted to take Kargil and he did this and gave Newaz government a slap. The later show why Musharraf was being kicked out.

^ There isn't much substance in your post other than usual mud slinging and learn to trust the people.
I believe Niaz had more inner look of earlier events as compare to you or me and I have seen the governance of BB and N.Sharif .

The demise of Pakistan lay in the hands of generals who broke the country
And in which book do you read this.
Musharraf is not Zia similarly BB is not ZA.

There are questions and your knowledgeful answers which lead to few more:
1- Not even BB has blamed generals for her ouster!
2- Do you really believe that PM was ignorant of Kargil and he sat quite till he appointed second army chief.
3- N.Sharif has attempted assasination of P.Musharraf while he was onboard a civilian plane.

I was debating on Naiz’s level but I am happy to explain what I meant. General Zia use to do every thing to impress Mr Bhutto, he tried to impress him when ever he had the chance, so that he could be appointed as the Chief of army. Zia was a coward he was also terrified because after Zia came into being chief of army, he could also be fired if found not performing for Mr Bhutto. Mr Bhutto was deceived by Zia. The prime minister has the power to question his chief of army it has also the power to fire and appoint a new chief. The army has no business in the politics of Pakistan and it was also, what Mr Jinnah wanted before the creation of Pakistan. Mr Jinnah and Mr Bhutto thought a hundred years ahead for Pakistan. The army chief should never dare speak above the prime minister nor the President that is the rule of every democracy.

When the Partition date was set the British government ordered a opt forum to the Indian army. This opt forum will send the soldiers to Pakistan and or to India. However, the British never gave the Indian army positions of higher importance. The Muslims of the army who worked there way through and had high statures in the Indian army, invited Mr Jinnah for dinner as they contemplated the opt forums. Mr Jinnah excepted the dinner and came, as he sat and ate his dinner the soldiers or partial officers said “sir you should ask with our consent on who should lead the Pakistani army, who should be the chief of army,” Mr Jinnah filled with bewilderment by the remark and stopped eating he then loudly said “who dare say that, whose remark was this,” the officers looked at each other and astounded and pointed there fingers towards the person who gave the idea, Mr Jinnah stood up and walked towards that officer and grabbed him by his shirt collar and placing sturdy grip on his collar Mr Jinnah said, “If you come into Pakistan you will be under the rule of a civilian government, if you come to question the government of Pakistan dare not opt towards Pakistan opt towards India.”
