Pakistan is studying proposals for reforms within the Joint Chiefs
of Staff Committee (JCSC). The committee was created in May 1976 to
ensure integrated defence decision making and co-ordination between
the three services.
The Defence Committee of the National Assembly reviewed the existing
structure and role of the JCSC in a three-day session. Briefed by
senior military officials and Secretary of the Ministry of Defence,
Lt Gen (Rtd) Iftikhar Ali Khan, the chairman of the committee, Col
(Rtd) Cheema said that he would be submitting recommendations to the
prime minister.
Pakistan's Ministry of Defence has also completed a review of the
organisation, structure and role of the JCSC. Input from the three
services and recommendations from former service chiefs and defence
analysts within Pakistan was included.
