One must take into account the mess that Musharraf inherited when he took over as compared to Ayub Khan; this is more so when comparing both the guys. Ayub Khan did not inherit a large baggage of misadventures upon misadventures done on a global level, by previous leaders. He did not face sanctions or had the advantage (or disadvantage of) a second Afghan War. Moreover, India was still in its nascent development stage, loooking inwards.

Musharraf had a lot more challenges as compared to Ayub Khan. In my opinion Gen. Ayub made a mess of things when there was really no need to go to any war! It set us back to a point where we have still not recoverd from. If things would have been differently handled then, we would have been an industrialised nation today instead of still depending upon agriculture and under threat from looming water wars.

Hi,

It has been rumoured that some students went to see ayub Khan after he lost power to wish him well. Someone asked him why he put a man like Yahya Khan in power---the retort was---the way pakistanis treated me, I treated them back in the same manner---.

Indeed, Ayub's challenges as compared to the ones faced by Musharraf were no where close to in intensity---but the when you look at the wider picture---both of them faced their magic moments under the similiar scenarios for what they were trained for.

Looking at the results of both the generals---what comes out clearly is that both these men were batting with the teams of similiar calibre as that of the pakistani cricket team that came back from australia.

A better team than the one Musharraf had, would have done wonders for pakistan.
