Mr Viet is convinced Vietnam will overtake Indonesia in due time now that it is taking advantage of US trade war with China. There's only one problem with his take on this subject, where's the proof that Vietnam is set to surpass Indonesia?

Imagine, you run a factory in China producing let’s say cheap plastics toys. All of the products are exported to the US. Too bad: chinese wages are rising fast, worse: the US tariffs are rising faster. Now you have a move the factory to another country. Which country do you chose?

Vietnam or Indonesia?

Albeit China factory moving out to Vietnam, there is a limit what a 100 million aging population can do,

There is no way in any scenario Indonesia lag behind Vietnam in GDP number or productivy for our worker can churn out per hours.

vietnam obviously, due to its close location to China . This proximity advantage is a big advantage for Vietnam, since Vietnam can easily source parts from China needed for manufacturing and connect with China's huge supply chain . However that also makes Vietnam vulnerable to Beijing's will(they can turn off the tap in case relations turns sour ).

which translates to China can break Vietnam anytime because of the South China Sea, that's a huge leverage Vietnam isn't gonna escape from.

Vietnam does have the advantage of being close to China and easy access to existing supply chain. It also has the same sort of authoritarian government to ensure policy continuity, critical for stable economic growth. It will be top 3 in ASEAN in 20 years for certain, assuming it doesn't get into an armed conflict with China over SCS.

Thailand and Philippines looks promising and maybe their GDP will reach trillion $ in the next 10 year and will be in top 3 economies in ASEAN and will be in top 3 in the next 20 year.
