Israel says 242 people were taken into Gaza by Hamas militants on 7 October - among them are 37 children.

Hamas wants to use the hostages in exchange for all the prisoners being held, so even if the two sides cease fire, the chance of rescuing the hostages is almost zero.

Maybe by the time Israel bombed the Gaza Strip, it had accepted the worst-case scenario.
