I want to tell Daniel that Western governments usually have stronger constitutional protection against such funny business. What he should be more worried is that in some non_Western governments, where such protections are missing, any funny business causes 'disappearance', not some namby-pamby 'media reporting'.

Seems Hamas is banking on Israeli deescalating due to the fact that they have more to lose in a long term conflict.
My opinion is, it was not very smart of Hamas to start the operation at this time. The Gazans will be at a receiving end of massacre.
Taking a zoom out view of geopolitics, Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas would want to escalate in the backdrop of Arab overtures to Israel. They might have scuttled the process, but a year down the line, the process will restart, and then what?
Or this escalation where Hamas entered into Israel proper, fired rockets, abducted Israelis, and removed the aura of invincibility that Israel had, hoping other Arab states get the confidence of doing something like this in future. Or indirectly hoping to trigger overthrow of Arab regimes.
Doesn’t make sense, to be honest, as to what Hamas has achieved.

My guess is, they wanted to upset the apple cart of Arab-Israeli rapprochement, which is understandable, as they felt they may be left out. But while doing so, they way overshot the runway and forced Israel towards complete annihilation of Gaza for fear of future copycat attacks if left insufficiently destroyed. Israel is now taking the dictum never do an enemy small harm and ratcheting it to all nines.
