To understand his letter, people needs to be morally very high, which we cant expect from you. Have read ever about Gandian philosiphy, as per him, if someone slaps you once you should not hit back back give him a chance to either reactify his mistake or slap again. Such a nobel person will call his worst enemy as friend and with respect, and you are tearming it as friendship.
