Translation: Harigen 1937

"I can't giver a reference to ... person a and person b from Indian religious background because they were not historic entities (present in our present time) but what I can give reference to is Abu Bakar , and Umar who ruled over a big civilization yet they lived like poor fellows (their account is found in our present history)

The speech was being given in order to teach ruling members how to live their lives / or how to govern with no corruption

Is this an attempt to take credit where none is due ?

Gandhi hardly needed inspiration for being simple. In any case he did not see people as hindus / Muslims / Christians/ Sikhs / dalits etc as we like to. He saw them as humans.

He there would then have been inspired by a fellow human.

"Take Credit"? Who is 'taking credit' of anything? What is there to take credit of,BTW? Gandhi is "quoted" here saying what AzadPakistani has written...Gandhi isn't saying something about Muslims..He is talking about Umar and Abu Bakar..the first two caliphs of Muslims who ruled over, probably, the largest empire till that time but still led very, very simple life.It just happen ~ 1350 years ago so we have very good and authentic records of them..May be thats why he gave the example of those two..Chill buddy :meeting:
