One-time Indian High Commissioner to Colombo Gopalkrishna Gandhi yesterday accused the previous government of having executed LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran’s son during the final phase of the Vanni offensive in May 2009.

Gandhi alleged that the Sri Lankan military had executed 12-year-old Balachandran because he was the younger son of the LTTE’ leader. The retired Indian career diplomat subscribed to the allegation of mass scale killings of civilians during the final assault though he refrained from mentioning an exact figure.

Gandhi was delivering the keynote address at a ceremony to mark the completion of President Maithripala Sirisena’s first year in office, at the BMICH.

Gandhi served as Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka in 2000 before taking over Indian mission in Oslo. Gandhi addressed the gathering after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who briefly explained the existing UNP-SLFP partnership and future projects.

War winning Army Chief Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka was in the audience. The Colombo-based diplomatic community including UN Resident Representative Subinay Nandy and Indian High Commissioner Y. K. Sinha were among the guests.

Field Marshal Fonseka has denied accusations pertaining to Balachandran’s execution.

Paying a glowing tribute to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa for giving resolute political leadership to Sri Lanka’s victory over the world’s most ruthless terrorist organization, the former Indian HC endorsed so far unsubstantiated war crimes allegations.

India voted twice in 2012 and 2013 for resolutions moved against Sri Lanka at the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Many an eyebrow was raised at the timing of Gandhi’s statement meant to give credence to war crimes allegations.

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera on Thursday declared that preparations for the setting up of war crimes court would begin next week.

The guest speaker went to the extent of declaring that there wouldn’t have been no requirement for Prabhakaran to take up arms if Sri Lanka had addressed the grievances of Tamil speaking people raised by past Tamil leaders.

Having formed the LTTE in the early 1980s, India deployed its Army here (July 1987-March 1990) leading to the loss of over 1,500 of its officers and men.

Gandhi urged Sri Lanka not to repeat the past mistakes of her previous leaders, while urging the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government to accommodate Tamil representatives in the cabinet even at the expense of current Constitutional provisions. Gandhi pushed the Sri Lankan leadership to follow the South African example of accommodating more South Africans of Indian origin in Mandela’s cabinet.

Gandhi also referred to the killing of The Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickremetunga on January 8, 2009.

Stupid ! Another coutry's war is none of our business.

LTTE even killed unborn children. Why the heck the Ghandi guy concerned of Prabha's son? Are Sinhalese children lesser important than Prabha's son?

You'll be considered a hegemonic tyrant, if you influence neighboring countries and meddle in their affairs. And a one way claim to fame ticket for any country which stands up against you. This has happened before, hasn't it?.

There is something fundamentally wrong with you, if your conscience approves killing children, any children.

@Gibbs et all...I think it is high time, this chap is banned or something. All views on politics are acceptable, this is nothing short of support of slaughter.

These Indians want to bully SL into having a subservient Foreign Policy, I dont think SL is Bangladesh, they have a lot more pride in their independence.

On the plight of Tamils, there should be an independent Tamil state carved out of India.

It's call collateral damage.

This Lankan rat conveniently forgot how the dominant Sinhalas tried to exterminate Tamils, passed discriminate laws, violence against Tamils, killings, before India started supporting LTTE.

Ask Kumar Sangakarra and his family on their role in protection of Tamil Families from fanatic Sinhala mobs with attitude like urs.

What are discriminative laws passed on Tamils? Are you nuts

And how is that working out for ya. Wana talk about it................Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mayanmar, Bangladesh all are cozying up to China. I know as an Indian it would be hard for you to accept what i said, but can you prove it otherwise?

Same as China isnt it? India and its nearby lands have always been linked historically. Tamil Kingdoms have always ruled the northern part of Lanka until the British came or until few years before they came. Tamils living there are a continuation of Tamils living in India. Now how will u wish away like that?
Indian Bengalis protested against the atrocities of Pakistan in Bangladesh. What's wrong if we did the same for our brethens in an neighbouring Island separated by 25 kms of broken chain of Islands.
We are doing it democratically.

It's not about same as China,
Nations which befriended India a long time ago are tilting away from her, and frankly India has no right to support an ethnicity just because it had "kingdoms".
Foster good a relationship within your neighborhood, start by becoming a "friend" rather a "regional power". If you can't do that, well then India is a one way ticket for nations in the region to claim fame.

Well we will do whatever for our own permanent interest .That is how the world works .We dont care about others concerns .
So far we wont support terrorism .LTTE was one mistake and we ended that in there .
Now we use our own diplomatic capability .

And some Stupid *** Indian on PDF claimed that India and Sri Lanka have common interest in the region. From financing LTTE to Entangling Sri Lanka in War Crimes.
I am very sure that every Sri lankan is aware of Indian intentions in their country and the region.

No matter what Indian move will be to weaken Sri lanka , Pakistan will be there to counter it with Sri Lanka. From Diplomatic level to Strategic level. Pakistan should play China card to stop India from going further into UN War Crimes probe against Sri Lanka.

How to do that when exactly Tamils were being slaughtered? India never poked its nose until Lanka supported Pakistan logistically during 71 war, which was uncalled for. It was only after this incident, India took "interest" in Lanka.
