Gama Pehalvan: The man who single handedly shielded the Hindus from a religiously charged Mob

Indians don't even know about real kabaddi. Real kabaddi, or the slapping kabaddi is still played in Pakistan, while Indians have no clue about it.

Not entirely correct, it is still very popular winter's game in rural Indian Punjab, that said, Thappadan (slapping) wali Kabaddi has been banned for a while now, main reason, it leads to so many fights amongst Kabaddi players and their supporters. I attended the Kabbaddi World Cup in Punjab, India won the final on the last raid as Chisti was stopped by a guy named Yadu (Yadwinder Singh) if my memory serves me correct.

That said, only rural Indian Punjabis play this game, rest of the India plays other Kabaddi.

You can never take kabaddi out of a real Punjabi. You may already know this, played by Punjabis (predominantly us Sikhs) in US, Canada and Australia, it was biggest attraction at recently concluded Sikh games in Adelaide, Australia.

On topic, Gama Pehelwan used to be a household name in Indian Punjab. Even in my school days in 90s, if someone boast about their strength, we used to say, aya vadda Gama Pehelwan.

PS: When I read my response before sending, it looks like I agreed with you, anyway, wasted 5 mins writing it so why not post it :)

Is Kushti a popular sport in Pakistan or only Cricket fans are there.
In India wrestling has picked up a lot in last 10-15 years, and wrestlers are doing well in International competitions also (Olympics etc.)
It's extremely popular here, there are many other forms of wrestling. However, the Government lacks both the funds and methods to extract local talent.

One of my friends broke the other guy's leg in a fight related to kabaddi a couple of weeks back in California because slapping escalated to a full fight :)

Whats the point in chantedaar kabaddi? It doesn't test strength or techniques.
Dr bijli is my favourite player in chantedaar kabaddi.

No brother we love and know about the game. Don't speculate.

I have been in MMA and played kabaddi during school days. It's picking up now with super leagues.

I am sure Korean Indian and Pakistani will get only better her. Unfortunately due to political scenario the game is loosing. If we had better inter country tournament it would have grown faster.

He meant khuli kabaddi, not traditional indian..in khuli kabaddi its 1vs 1 , so its more strength oriented than indian one..but less teamwork and technique

I wouldn't say it is more strength oriented because the players don't grapple as much and the emphasis is on "gutt pharna" as opposed to "kenchi laani". But it is more aggressive because of the physical contact. BTW it is only in a real professional match that we don't slap in Indian kabaddi, practice matches we hit and slap just like real kabaddi.

Hit is allowed but slap receive a warning from the ref and a more harder slap from the opponent team...the slaps keep getting harder and harder and eventually it turns into a brawl.. and when its village vs village, those fight can get ugly...hence the organisers and village elders have banned slaps too in my area. But it happens sometimes.
To be honest i never slapped anyone ever in kabaddi(traditional)...i just go and concentrate on getting points, not slapping or looking for a fight..now i dont even make it to village team ..

Yaar simple answer is kabaddi has graduated from village sport to pro league. In a professional game on TV you can't hit without protective equipment which will ruin the fun of the game. So disallowing slaps is a natural progression part of the game growing up.

People in Pak don't enjoy kabaddi unless players slap each other. Its known as chandha ali kabaddi. It does test strength and technique though. It's popular in pak punjab and now also in kpk to smaller extent . These tournaments in punjab rural areas will always have 1 or 2 pathan players from KPK so it's most be because its fun to watch. Like around 19:30 player is pathan from Lakki Marwat. Remember there is no government support and these players get money from spectators after winning match like in good old days.
