Gama Pehalvan: The man who singlehandedly shielded the Hindus of his mohala from a religiously charged mob in 1947
Among his legendary accomplishments was when he challenged the top 12 wrestlers of Europe and America to a bout on the same day and one after the other defeated them all, none lasting more than a few seconds!

A few years ago an international tournament of Desi Kushti was held in Kohlapur district in India’s Maharashtra state. Some wrestlers from Lahore were taking part and a rumor spread that in one of the bouts the great grandson of Gama Pehalvan is taking part. Astonishingly a crowd of 200,000 poor villagers stood in rain for 14 hours to catch a glimpse of this man only because of his heritage, the local newspaper declared, “The grandson of the God of Wrestling is coming.” I am not sure if the grandson of the God did come but certainly such an honor would not even be reserved for Sachin Tendulkar.

Ghulam Mohammaed, known as Great Gama was an incredible man and perhaps did have superhuman powers. Born in Amritsar to a Kashmiri family, he went on to win titles of Rustam-e-Hind (Champion of India) and Rustam-e-Zaman (Champion of the Universe). During a career of over 50 years he was never defeated, even though at 5 foot 7 inches he was usually much shorter than his opponent.

His diet and exercise routine were legendary and included several gallons of milk, 3000 push-ups and 5,000 sit ups every day! The famous martial arts star Bruce Lee acknowledged his respect for the Great Gama and claimed that he had adopted parts of his diet and exercise routine in his own training.

Among his legendary accomplishments was when he challenged the top 12 wrestlers of Europe and America to a bout on the same day and one after the other defeated them all, none lasting more than a few seconds!

Early in 1947 with the fire of hate spreading through Punjab Gama Sahib moved to Lahore and settled on Mohni Road. Gama Sahib told the Hindus of his mohala that if they are attacked he will defend them with his life and when one day a mob approached the community Gama Sahib stood in front of them with all of his group of wrestlers, as the leading hooligan came near a slap from Gama Sahib sent him flying and the rest ran away never to come again.

A few days later Gama Sahib escorted all the Hindus to the border where with tears streaming from his eyes he bade them goodbye giving them one weeks food from his own money.

Unfortunately towards the end of his life he struggled financially and is rather unknown among the present generation of Pakistani youth despite the fact that he is the great grandfather of Kalsum Nawaz, the wife of Nawaz Sharif.

The Mace.....It is the perfect weapon to smash your opponents.
An it reminds me of some one else.....Son of Wind God!

Its not "3000 pushups", its 3000 dands ...also known as hindu push-ups..its easier than push-ups...too bad wrestling now a days have time limit and there is no need to do 5000 squats(bodyweight) and 3000 dands...as bodyweight exercises build endurance, rather than strength.

Everyone in Pakistan (atleast in Punjab where people love kushti) Knows Gama pehalwaan.
Who ediot told the OP that he is unknown in Pakistan?
I cant say about Sindh KP and Baluchistan but he is an iconic figure in Punjab.
"As strong as Gama Pehalwaan" is a common phrase for a very strong person.

Is Kushti a popular sport in Pakistan or only Cricket fans are there.
In India wrestling has picked up a lot in last 10-15 years, and wrestlers are doing well in International competitions also (Olympics etc.)

My grandfather was a wrestler. And yes it's bigger sport than in India, albeit not Greco-Roman style. Plus kabaadi is bigger in rural areas here as compared to India.

Both kushti and Kabaddi is very popular sport in Pakistan. Specially Kabaddi.
Mostly in central punjab. Lahore Faisalabad Gujranwala side.
Its more common in Rural areas. Where regular tournaments are being held on Mitti waley akharey.
But i do feel this sport does not get the due attention it deserves. Jara Pehalwan, Bholu pehalwaan are also worth mentioning as famous pehalwaans in Pakistan

Indians don't even know about real kabaddi. Real kabaddi, or the slapping kabaddi is still played in Pakistan, while Indians have no clue about it.

Oh I did not know that he was great grandfather of Kalsum Nawaz, the wife of Nawaz Sharif.

Why Indian call him Indian pehlwan when he preferred Pakistan as his home in 1947?

According to wiki

Gama's daily diet was 4 gallons (15 litres) of milk,a pound and a half of crushed almond paste made into a tonic drink along with fruit juice and other ingredients to promote good digestion. This high protein and high energy diet helped him accumulate muscle mass.

Later in his life when asked about who was his strongest opponent, Gama replied, "Raheem Bakhsh Sultani Wala " another Muslim wrestler from Gujranwala, now in Punjab, Pakistan.
