The prestigious GAGAN project, which will make India only the fourth country in the world to have this system, will finally be inaugurated on Monday. The project is expected to give a major boost to the Indian aviation navigation system and also help neighbouring countries.

As per the plans drawn by the ministry of civil aviation, the programme will be inaugurated by aviation minister Gajapathi Raju in New Delhi. ” GAGAN will be dedicated to the nation” said a senior AAI official.

GAGAN, which stands for GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation, is a joint collaboration between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Indian Space Research Organisation. Although a lot of technology and instruments used for GAGAN have been procured from abroad, a lot of indigenous improvisation has been made in it.

According to AAI officials, GAGAN is designed to provide additional accuracy, availability and integrity necessary to enable users to rely on GPS for all phases of flight.

Officials involved with the development of the project stated that increased accuracy would help in position reporting, allowing for more uniform and high-quality air traffic management.

In addition, GAGAN will provide benefits beyond aviation to all modes of transport, including maritime, highways, and railroads. GAGAN offers free enhanced satellite navigation signals over India, which are 10 times more precise than GPS.

Yeahhhhh :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:
I was waiting for this not that i was interested in the program but because it will help us in Building Skyscrapers and will Allow DGCA to ease rules in height of building in areas around any Airport.
Also buildings in BKC might get vertical enlargement. :D
BTW congratulations to the scientists.:enjoy:
How Sir......?........o_O

.
Yes. Was eagerly waiting for the news from.months. Another mile stone chieved. Thats to every1 involved. Congratulations.

DGCA has strict rules for areas around airports because of lack of this technology. As stated in the OP that only four countries has this technology including China and US.
If you look at China and US you will find that America has skyscrapers in areas surrounding Major Airports And Also Areas in Aerotropolis. In china HK has many skyscrapers surrounding airport
But in India we lacked this technology. That's why you could see BKC buildings having less height,
then the height of World One in Mumbai was also scaled down because of such fears even though it was not sittuated around any Airport and also Devendra Fadnavis approached DGCA to allow vertical expansion of buildings in BKC nad also requested DGCA for ease of restrictions in Height around airports.
But after this DGCA might allow the restrictions to loosen up that's why you see AAI in collaboration with ISRO in this project.
Ok.....Thankyou Sir........:-)

Civil Aviation Minister Launches GAGAN System

Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, formally launched the GAGAN system (GPS AIDED GEO AUGMENTED NAVIGATION) at a function here today. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister congratulated the entire team on development of the GAGAN project.

GAGAN is the first SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) in the world certified for Approach with Vertical Guidance operating in the Equatorial Ionospheric region and the third SBAS to have achieved this feat, after WAAS of USA and EGNOS of Europe. GAGAN was already certified for en route operation since 30th December 2013.

GAGAN is a joint effort of Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). In the aviation field, GAGAN will support more direct air routes, reduce fuel consumption and improve safety. In addition, GAGAN provides benefits to agriculture, all modes of transportation and public services such a defence services, security agencies and disaster recovery management by aiding in search and rescue to locate the disaster zone accurately.

Since 14th February 2014, GAGAN has been continuously providing navigation signals from GSAT-8 and GSAT-10 satellites launched by ISRO, augmenting the performance of GPS signals received over Indian Airspace.

Shri R.N.Choubey, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Smt M.Sathiyavathy, Director General of Civil Aviation, Shri R.K.Srivastava, Chairman, Airports Authority of India, Dr. Y.V.N.Krishnamurthy, Scientific Secretary,ISRO were also present on the occasion.

Another important application is for military. Missiles or planes no longer needs to use Glossnas or US based gps systems. So any missile launch or plane location will be not detected. I believe India will get better info for military use.

For that you must wait till IRNSS is fully done. GAGAN only augments the existing GPS signal.

India is the 4th country in the world to have this!!! Awesome!! :)
