What's new

Future wars would be non contact wars: DRDO chief

The key question is, what is DRDO doing about it.

Can it survive the future or be disbanded and sold off to private and more efficient conglomerates?

Will it be strong enough to produce military equipment that can protect India? I don't think so.

10 years ago no one would have believed that India will have flag on moon or can launch a nuke sub, ACC and sophisticated missiles likeK-15, K-14 and IRNSS.

But these projects are reality now.

Problem isn't DRDO or for the matter of fact HAL. Problem is mismanagement and unaccountability.
Privatisation is not an option at all. Defence sector is already open for private organisations but they simply wont have the money and time to harvest a crop after long periods.

Even if privatised the science dudes have to do the research and not the businessmen. Private firms are profit oriented. They simply wont send a probe in space for research if they cant make bucks of it.

So solution is to improve not disband or privatise.

FYI those are done by ISRO.

Not DRDO.

There is a huge difference. A nuke submarine has taken years and still not inducted. SBC is making it in Vishakhapatnam. It is a different entity totally.

IRNSS is also an ISRO development. INS Vikrant II is made by CSL.

I am asking about DRDO. Why are their projects so slow and snail paced?

The privatization is limited to only secondary industries like making spare parts. Name me one single tactical or strategic platform where anyone has been allowed to make anything from scratch? Not one.

Privatization is no problem for empires like Tata, L&T etc. The government just knows that they will outperform the PSUs and win contracts faster, therefore making PSUs useless.

is it just me? I still think ground forces will still play the key role at least in the next 20 - 50 years.

Single soldier effectiveness and survivability I believe is the main thing.

Don't get me wrong, unmanned weapons will play an increasingly huge role, but front and center will still be infantry.

I agree with you.

The unmanned systems are not reliable enough at the moment ahdn have many glitches, limitations, which limit their uses.

The ability of human soldier to face and dodge or destroy the threat is still far greater than unmanned systems, at the moment.

as far as I know some systems do use parts made by private firms @sandy_3126 can add specification.

Ok. So is there any Private player capable of that ???
If allowed whats your estimate time that they will or can do it a full platform from scratch ???

TATA & L&T doesn't need government's help to set up defence industry. They will only need government's nod.
I think you are trying to say allow private firms in Defence development and NOT PRIVATISATION. Privatisation is where you sell the PSUs to private firms. More like a 100% disinvestment. What you really mean ???

And remember when you give the full production decisions to Private players they will be making things that earn them a lot of money and will not be keen to develop things that will not yield a profit. Their priority will be money and not the future need. Todays burning needs will be solved but future will be unclear.

Nobody is against private player in defence field and nobody wants to keep PSU monopoly on sector. But things is we cant trust Private plays with some tech n platforms for obvious reasons.

PS: I am known DRDO & HAL hater but I don't hate the idea of PSU. Our PSUs are like landlines in mobile age. Problematic. But one doesn't understand their importance still a cell tower stopped functioning in one's area

Both ways.

Let me give you a simple example. Boeing F/A-18 super hornet, doesn't come out of government hangars.

Same stuff applicable to India.

That's what I want to see. Because with its current structure, Indian defense government firms can NEVER give the quality that a US firm can offer or what it could even at nascent stages.

Hahahah you want to compare Boeing or Locki with HA/DRDO ??? Well good luck
How many new private players came into defence business in last 2/3 decades world wide.???

Aviation culture in USA dated back to world War eras. Our industry is still a kid infront of them.

And trust me NONE Indian private player has a magic stick to catch up with Boeing or Locki. Their R&D (Boeing or Locki) was financed in world wars by US govt. that means they got helped by the situation. Now they are just maintaining it by the profits. That wont be a case today for our private players. Otherwise nobody has stopped TATA or Ambani form setting up a defence business in or out of India.

And about PSUs. ISRO is an ideal example. So we don't need to sell PSUs. We just need to fix them.
