The Kumul Khans, who were direct descendants of the Khans of the Chagatai Khanate, also joined China, their Khan Abdullah Beg submitted to Chinese rule in 1696 for protection against Dzungar Buddhist Mongols and fought alongside Chinese to free their land. The Kumul Khanate continued to live on as a vassal state in China until 1930. They were descendants of Genghis Khan and the legitimate heirs to the Chagatai lands on which the Uyghurs lived.
The Kumul Khans were loyalists to China and fought alongside China in several wars, their last Khan Maqsud Shah even dressed like Chinese and imitated Chinese habits. He died in 1930.

China freed Uyghurs in the Tarim Basin from Buddhist Dzungar rule after being asked to intervene by anti-Dzungar Uyghurs like Emin Khoja and the Kumul Khan. Only the Khojas, who previously served as puppets to the Dzungars, resisted. If you complain about China "occupying" in the 18th century, you support Buddhist Dzungars ruling Uyghurs.
