What's new

From Buyer to Builder - Navy gets PM nod to build 6 frigates under joint venture

There are two questions. can we afford these? and which SAM we will choose as BD is inducting MRSAM for the first time and the western SAM is expensive.

Of course BD can afford 6 frigates between now and 2030. Remember that BD is expected to have a nominal GDP of at least 1 trillion US dollars by 2030.

BD will almost certainly go for the Aster 15/30 SAM from the report as the partners would be European.

The thing to ensure however - is that this new Frigate design (from whatever source) must have VLS tubes as part of ToT and full battle networking integration with other BN vessels as well as air and missile trajectory tracking and integration. This is the only way 'future-proof' the design. Otherwise no deal.

I have little doubt that the frigate design will be 4000+ tonnes and will have VLS and all that you mentioned.BN is led by men of vision.

. . .
So first 2 by 2022, next 2 by 2025 and last 2 by 2030?

Why would the last 2 take 5 years compared to the 3 years earlier?

I was wondering the same thing as it should take less time with follow-on ships.
As long as all ships are in service by 2030, then I will be satisfied personally.

Yes, 6 modern frigates within the next 12 years is basically 1 frigate/2 years. That's not pretty bad given they will be local productions. Side by side, we will take ownership of the 2 remaining frigates from China as well (I guess this year?!).

I would say that's a pretty solid surface fleet. In the meanwhile, we need to buy few some subs.

As I mentioned before that there is no chance for new 4000+ ton frigates to be inducted before 2020 and BN has to accommodate their modernization in a budget.

And 2-3 new submarines will be added to the fleet in that last 5 years(2025-2030). So nothing to worry at all. :toast_sign::toast_sign:

That’s good for a small developing country like Bangladesh.

We still have 2 frigates coming from China, probably this year. After that, I agree, we dont need to buy anymore and just focus on its production.

And regarding subs, weren't 2 supposed to come by 2023?

I meant the local one.

And yes, 2 more submarines within 2025. (There is a possibility of a fleet of 6 submarine by 2025, but I am not sure about that 'whisper').

Want to see the Frigates no less capable than BNS Bangabandhu. It will be total waste if it misses one vital component. Should be equipped with better AShW, ASW, AD. Name it Bangabandhu 1-6. No problem

Navy will have 6 submarine according to a BN official in a talk show held on Armed Forces Day 2017. Not sure if that includes our 2 ming or not though.

6 subs by what timeline ?
Excluding the Ming Submarines then. Our Mings are already 20 years old. By 2030 they would be 30. That's a lot for a submarine. By that time old type 53 frigates will be decommissioned too. BNS Osman is already scheduled to be decommissioned in next few years.
