It's uncalled for - as far as I know Basmati grows on both sides. If Pakistan was using a term like "Darjeeling Tea" then I would understand India going in and saying only Indian tea can use that GI.

Word Basmati itself is a sanskrit word.

The word basmati has been derived from two Sanskrit roots vas (aroma) and mayup (ingrained). While combining mayup changes it mati making it vasmati. Basmati has been spelled differently like Bans-matti, Bansumutti, Bansmatti, Bansumutte, Basmatte.[7]

Pakistan protested and has been given time till 10th December this year to prove its GI tagging, otherwise a country which produces over 50% percent of world basmati rice in its 27 different varieties will not be able to sell the same anywhere in the world. Loss of basmati will be a loss of history, territory, pride, aroma and the unique taste which binds the people of central Punjab of Pakistan together.

Author of this blog is giving false information India accounts for over 70% of the world's basmati rice production. Rest 30 % is shared between pakistan , indonesia, nepal, srilanka.

And how that makes it Indian patent?

And how that makes it Indian patent?
Everything, from its name to its geographical location, and india being 70 percent sole producer does make it indian patent.

Indiot. Just because it was a Sanskrit word, it doesn't mean it was first defined by a Hindustani.

The first usage of the word “Basmati” is found in the Punjabi classic Heer Ranjah (1766) by the Punjabi poet Waris Shah [34]

What a complete moron you are.

Half of the discoveries in science are named in Latin, the other half in Greek. DOES THAT FKIN MEAN ITALY AND GREECE MAY CLAIM ALL THESE AS THEIR OWN???

@peagle @Indus Pakistan @Pan-Islamic-Pakistan @Musings
I despair a little bit more each and every day at the delusions of Hindustan. All Indian. Everything Indian! Sanskrit word, so product is Indian!! Indian Indian Indian.

Are you saying it is not indian product ? lol infact it will be you the one stupid to say that because even the pakistani decision makers who are wanting to fight this case, they are not saying this. What they are saying is yes it is indian product but pakistan should also be included in this coz we also produce a little of it, and we also shared the same ancestral heritage. lol

Question here is not if india is getting GI tag, question is if india is willing to share it with pakistan.

If India goes on that path, then Pakistan will provide seed of that crop to whole of the earth as well as give this rice an English name.
Lylyna pora basmati phir. We will do the same with basmati as Israel did with Palestinians olive.

You might wish to quit while you're behind in this particular line of reasoning.

Mr Mirza
The problem with Indians and their food is it generally tastes shit. Give you an example when I buy mangoes - the Indians start exporting theirs in April May - ours aren’t ready till about June. The taste is chalk and cheese - completely different.
Same goes for the rice - call it what you want - Pakistani rice is far superior. There is a huge cash and carry called Lubna foods in Bradford - the owners are of Indian origin yet their own BRANDED rice is of Pakistani origin. I asked them why and he confirmed the Indian rice tastes sh1t. Indians desperately try to hijack - take over - brand their food as whatever they want to - shit will remain shit.
It’s not rice - honestly it’s everything they touch - rusk cakes - dried fruit - vegetables etc - they are 2nd class.
Btw changing the topic - mum loves chalgozaay - now that’s an expensive but in Pakistan bro - prices going over 10,000 per kilo!

Anything is possible but there's something seriously rotten in Pakistan's current power structure.
There loyalties seems to be misplaced and they clearly spending their energies for catering to foreign interests.

That's interesting. I never realised India was so important. Did India apply to itself for the GI tag such that it can decide whether it's "willing to share it with Pakistan"?

You're actually sounding like you seriously think India can own the word "basmati". I'm truly concerned for you now.

Please, go back to your original argument that basmati is a Sanskrit word, hence this contributes significantly to India's watertight case for ownership of the GI rights. At least we could dismiss that as an attempt at simple comedy.

Pakistan grown Basmati rice is suppuror than Indian grown Basmati rice. Its longer, Wider and much fuller when cooked.

I prefer Aahu Baraha sella rice. Available in Pakistani and Arabic grocery and Halal meat stores.
