Abey agar natural talent nahi ho tou education, good jobs, political stability etc se kuchh farak nahi padega, kuchh faayda nahi hoga. Aur woh natural talent aya biological evolution through droughts se. Don't go off-topic.South Indians especially Tamils are way more progressive than North Indians for sure - From Nobel Laureates to Classical Artists and from ISRO/DRDO/HAL Chiefs to Chess Grand masters in the country - Tamil Nadu dominates in STEM and it's various fields -
- Importance of Education: In many communities in TN, there is a vey high importance accorded for education. Education trumps everything. For instance, when it comes to marriages most Tamil parents would choose a highly educated middle class guy for their daughter, ceteris paribus, than a less educated super wealthy guy .
- Presence of Madras: Madras has been a major center of education in British India for centuries. Having Madras was/is a big advantage for the Tamils. It was a presidency capital like Bombay and Calcutta. But, while Calcutta suffered from many other things [such as disturbance around freedom movement & partition riots] Madras grew practically undisturbed in 350 years. While Bombay was built on commerce, Madras tried to grow its strength on education.
- Education reach: For many decades, there was a strong effort to spread the fruits of education to all communities. This produced a large pool educated people.
- Networks: Raghuram Rajan (RBI Governor) & Aravind Subramaniam (Chief Economic Adviser) are long time friends who went to the same institutes [IIMA]. They knew each other's strength well. Thus, Rajan was able to pull his old buddy into this new role. Success/intelligence depends a lot on networks.
- Role models: Having role models does help a lot too. Once some members of your region get ahead, others get inspired. Chandrashekar grew with his uncle Raman as inspiration. Viswanathan Anand, Venkataraman Ramakrishnan, Srinivasa Ramnujan all come from very close Kaveri river towns of Mayiladuthurai, Chidamabaram and Kumbakonam
@Rafael @mithyaaTamilians are one of the most gifted communities in the world. Tamilians are very inventive people. There are many innovative people in Tamil Nadu but they had to pay a heavy price in the form of droughts. Frequent droughts made Tamilians innovative. Only people with certain qualities can survive conditions of drought. As more droughts occur those qualities intensify. Drought-induced-evolution defines the Tamil intelligence. Over umpteen generations droughts moulded and chiseled the Tamil mind into what it is. It was Darwin's law at work.
