French prime minister: This mythical topless lady better represents us than a Muslim veil

Prime Minister Manuel Valls has been one of the most outspoken government figures on the matter of Islamic attire in France, denouncing garments such as the burqa and the beach-friendly burkini as expressions of a "political project" antithetical to French values. Even after a top court suspended local bans on the burkini, Valls doubled down in defense of the bans, despite thedisagreement of other center-left ministers in the government.

At a meeting with members of his Socialist Party on Monday night, Valls made an appeal that invoked a national symbol of the French republic — Marianne, an allegory of freedom and reason in the form of the Goddess of Liberty that was adopted in the mid-19th century. A bust of her sits in every French town hall.

Valls seemed to cite a famous 1830 depiction of the Goddess of Liberty by the painter Eugene Delacroix, which shows a bare-breasted deity holding aloft the French tricolor while leading the people against a Bourbon monarch.

“Marianne has a naked breast because she is feeding the people!" Valls thundered. "She is not veiled, because she is free! That is the republic!”

But many French historians, as the Guardian newspaper noted, were quick to poke holes in the prime minister's rhetoric. In a tweetstorm, historian Mathilde Larerre ridiculed Valls for not recognizing Marianne as allegory and for confusing the classical, ancient origins of the female figure with a more convenient interpretation of her nudity.

Another Twitter user mocked Valls by pointing out that the lady in the Delacroix painting isn't going to a beach — the battleground between those, including Valls, who believe burkinis should be banned and others who think Muslim women have the right to wear what they want.

Non Monsieur Valls, dans ce tableau d'Eugène Delacroix, la dame ne va pas à la plage #Marianne

Valls and other French politicians in favor of such restrictions see the burkini, the burqa and Muslim headscarves as symbols of repression, female enslavement and, as the prime minister puts it, "backwards Islamism." Some right-wing mayors have even drawn a direct line between the wearing of such clothes and terrorism.

But a spokesman for the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the local bans, saying they "fuel religious intolerance and the stigmatization of Muslims" and "have only succeeded in increasing tensions."

Ahead of next year's presidential election, in which the ruling Socialists face a stiff challenge from the far-right, it's unlikely that Valls will back down.

well she could have atleast worn Armor, and I think it would have been better if he gave the example of Joan of Arc, no? It would have shown how misuse of religious laws has killed great people, and how France always needed little girls to save it, and how France couldnt do a thing to save them back.

The frankish warrior sure shows a guy meant for the FASHION? cultured quite colorful
I really would be very worried to put that dagger so close to my privates

Specially if I had to duck or bend downwards that dagger would certainly leave a nice puncture wound in the crotch area

But this is french "la warrior"

But nice rose flower head gear sure scares some enemy warriors

But look at the costume of women , can you imagine going to a royal party how colorful that must have been such amazing costumes

Who are you to decide what they consider their culture?

If any Indian Prime Minister had said something like that, he would have been called communal and there would have been unmatchable outrage in media by sickulars untill the PM is forced to resign.

There was an outrage among the seculars when Modi gifted the Geeta to Abe

And you are not french
I am not french. But the person who said that a topless mythical woman better represents us than a muslim veil is the PM of France. I just put forward his opinion which carries much more weight than your opinion

The one good thing about French is that they draw pictures

This is so french , beauty , death , religion
and that stare from that beautiful lady is haunting , and feels so real

Who was this lady sitting there that day when the Mr Painter decided to capture the moment
This picture is so real ... just look at it for a second .... its like you are just there so realistic

God knows how old this picture is ....but looks like you are standing there specially if you focus on the right side

It is not a photo it is a painting yet so real

Yep know that.

Most Europians and British are bigots and racists, compared to Indians. Why they come out better in surveys is because they know its bad to be a racist. Why would a person who is aware, ever say he is a racist in a survey? But these same people lecture us how to treat minorities, which has a psychological effect which creates more divide in society and forces majority to lean towards right. Then on the other side they fund NGOs which pamper minorities which attracts sympathy from some of the majority. Thats how you create ideological divides in a country.

Since EU, US and UK don't allow any kind of foreign funding or aid (yes its banned), and since we can't agitate minorites through it, sickular social activists should atleast write articles about this. But then its also of no use since India has a extremely low or almost no share of news coverage in other countries and thanks to Google 70%+ source of all news all over the world is controlled by US and UK, while US and UK people consume 90%+ local news only. So they don't allow other countries to manipulate/brainwash their people.

France is burning with just 5% minorities, India has 15% which used to be 10% 60 years ago. Talk about intolerance. Will Obama say now that he is concerned about religious tensions in France? Never, because it creates more psychological divide.

Soon they will be introducing vulgar statues in the churches as well. During my visit to Rome, whichever church we visited, my wife was told to cover her head with scarf. They even had wrap around sarongs for ladies wearing skirts. We dont have nude Nuns who are more covered than Muslims. These days its more of a political fashion than values. What amazes me is the reaction of Indians, yaar its the culture of subcontinent. I have been to India and I know people there too are still apprehensive of their sisters or ladies going on dates or getting pregnant out of wedlock.
