French military announces start of Iraq withdrawal

Apr 7, 2019

Broadcaster Europe 1 reports that the French Army has begun withdrawing from Iraq after the Islamic State group had been “defeated”.

The French artillery group was deployed on the Iraqi-Syrian border against the Islamic State (IS) group, “has completed its mission,” said Thursday the spokesman of the French General Staff.

“The Wagram Task Force has completed its mission” conducted as part of the international anti-IS coalition,” said Colonel Patrik Steiger at a press briefing.

Deployed in Iraq since September 2016 alongside the anti-jihadist coalition, the French artillery has “completed their mission” as part of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve.

The 150-strong Task Force Wagram, an artillery battle group armed with three Caesar 155 mm howitzers, has supported ground operations in Iraq and Syria.

French Army Caesars participated in the liberation of the Iraqi city of Mosul from the Qayarah Forward Base. They then were deployed along the Iraqi-Syrian border, near the Iraqi city of al-Qaim, in support of the Syrian Democratic Forces (FDS) engaged on the ground against IS, who defeated the Iraqi forces.

Lately, their main mission was to prevent ISIS fighters from crossing the Syrian border into Iraq to escape the offensive in the Middle Euphrates River Valley by providing coordinated and lethal artillery fires against the fleeing IS members.

seems like after Erdogans warning France, Macron put on to the reverse.. :D just two month ago they were saying totally different things..

In Turkish meeting, he said nicely but openly that France cannot stand there..

French artillery units were in Iraq by Iraqi gov invitation and it has nothing to do with Turkey, neither does it need Erdogans approval. IS is defeated on the conventional level, no need for these artillery units anymore thus they withdrew as deployment is not free but a continuous expense.

So many countries have been busy bombing Iraq since 2003 as a result of Iraqis topping their own President.

ok i didn't know. thx for the information.
anyway it costs so much to stay and French people wouldn't understand it when it is said "ISIS is finished".
we have enough to help in Mali (asked by Mali president and other nations)

Who's Erdogan to say we can't "stand there" ? Up to the Iraqi government to decide who has the right to stand there or not... The mission is accomplished, there's no more territories in Iraq held by ISIS,no need to maintain an artillery capacity in the country, especially that the missions became rarer and rarer.

France still maintains the task forces Monsabert and Narvik to train the Iraqi army, while air assets will be kept in the region to provide air support if needed be.

Turkey does a lot of inteligence operation in Syria and Irag. i believe you put so many EIDs on the road and make lots of trouble. I believe Turkey also did some dirty work in Mali to make France to withdraw as you do your business and we do our business. In Turkish strategy they dont mention these operations to keep and open door or face for the opposite country to withdraw..

Turkey superpower made France run away u happy bkw
nope, the thing is locals in the area are in Turkey's favor, its border with Turkey and thousands km away from France.
if you dont understand it, its a waste of time for me.
Mali, is in favor of France... thats how it works..
