About 690 French citizens who joined the Islamic State organisation are thought to still be in Syria and Iraq, French top anti-terror Prosecutor said on Friday.

“I think that the majority of them do not want to come back to France, considering the judicial proceedings against them,’’ Francois Molins said.

The fate of possible returning jihadists has been a hot topic in France, where a series of terror attacks, many of them claimed by Islamic State have cost more than 230 lives since early 2015.

Most current cases of returnees involved “a certain number of women, mostly widows with children, who may in fact be tempted to return to France.

“All adult returnees, as well as suspected child combatants from age 13 up, are brought before judges,’’ Molins said.

Younger children were cared for and rehabilitated through the educational system.

“On this issue, we need to leave aside any naivete,’’ Molins argued, saying that both women and adolescents had been trained to bear arms in Islamic State territory.

So far, 398 returnees have been placed under formal investigation, with 260 of them held in detention, Molins added.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that French nationals who travelled to Islamic State territory to fight alongside the militants would not be welcomed with open arms.

“We are not organising a repatriation process for our citizens who went to fight for Daesh in no case,’’ Macron said, adding that those caught in Iraq would have to face Iraqi justice.

tbh they shouldn't be allowed back in
They betrayed the country that fed them so now they should rot there imo

let's hope France is not like the UK where they start giving handouts to convicted terrorists returning home for the sake of "humanity"

disgusting.

They should be stripped of their citizenship. It is true, they would have never returned if IS had not been defeated, the prosecutor's words are absolutely spot on. One can determine repentance of a former terrorist from their disappointment through various different forms of interview techniques.

The children of course can't be treated as combatants if they are below a certain age. They should be given to relatives who have been vetted thoroughly. Or given to other Muslim families who are of good character. Women on the other hand need to be treated with a lot more cautious, just because they are a woman does not mean they are not capable of carrying out attacks or radicalizing others to do the same. And if they were caught in Iraq or Syria, let the governments there deal with them according to the local laws.

France has never been like U. K, so these ISIS returnees will never be welcomed back home with open arms and given handouts to 'integrate', like we do in UK. France has a different way of doing things and their laws are different from ours. So expect these jihadists returnees to be detained and treated accordingly.

But why is UK acting like this? You could give them life sentence after they return and nobody would bat an eye.

That means you don't know our laws very well. Even if our government somehow miraculously decided to prosecute and imprison these ISIS fanatics returnees. It will still not go unchallenged and will certainly cause some issues with our human rights groups, leftist and some Muslims here who are sympathetic with these returnees or who think it will be better to let them free and carry on with their lives.
Moreover, our laws won't even allow such returnees to be prosecuted or even kept under constant surveillance (needs alot of resources, manpower for this,). So there is little to no legal basis on which we can see detain or prosecute them. It's for this reason that out of the hundreds of jihadists who have returned home, there has been almost zero prosecuted or brought to justice. Lol They have carried on with their lives as if nothing happen and our authorities know little to nothing about what they are currently doing(well until another attack happens. Lol). So in other to even stand a chance of prosecuting them, we need to adopt new laws(like France did) to justify this, and there's no guarantee such a laws will even pass in parliament. :)

Plus you have to consider that in the U.K., with our proud tradition of freedom and not wanting to get involved in religious disputes, we have been kind of bending over backwards to regard even radical ideologies as expressions of free speech.
For example there are European countries with laws that ban the Burqa or full veil in public places/institutions or some certain regions in countries like France,Belgium, Switzerland,Netherlands, Italy, Bulgaria, and even Muslim counties like Chad, Cameroon, Egypt(though it's still a bill) , Turkey, Niger etc. Yet such a law could never be contemplated in Britain for obvious reasons. I'm just using this as an example, to make a point, not that I believe we should ban it.

So Some radical preachers and elements have used this opportunity to preach hate and brainwash some young British Muslims from a very young age, under the cover of free speech and multiculturalism. They have abused the system to further their agenda and mislead some British Muslims. Its very difficult for our authorities to detain and prosecute /imprison these hate preachers and radical elements given our laws, since there are many loopholes they can use for their defence eve in cases where it's openly know(with proves) that this preachers or individuals have been engaged in hate speech, encouraging terrorism etc. So it's a very tricky situation given our current laws and society.

Why not before departure then?
Who in Syria will notice or care for an extra 700 bodies?

Just saying, Tay.
Like one of our misbisters said, we should eliminate them in Syria, since he knows once they get here, they cant be prosecuted and will be free to carry on like nothing happened.

I think that laws could be changed so that having a past, fighting for IS,
must be reported to authorities.
Not reporting such activites should have a lifetime in prison penalty.
Anyone admitting fighting for IS, should have their life severly restricted.
I.E: having an electronic footchain, to make it easier to keep track of them.
In France, some suspects need to report in to the police three times a day,
and are basically in house arrest.
Voluntary exile from Europe should be an option and would be the best.
