As a sign of the importance taken by threats relating to the "cyber" world, the British Ministry of Defense [MoD] announced in June the reactivation of the 13th Signal Regiment, as a unit of the British Army specializing in defensive computer warfare [LID]. It earned the nickname “Cyber Regiment”.

“Cyber attacks are just as deadly as those we face on the physical battlefield. We must therefore prepare to defend ourselves […] and the 13th Signal Regiment is a vital addition to this defense ”, commented, on this occasion, Ben Wallace, the British Minister for Defense.

The Royal Air Force, like the Royal Navy, also has units specializing in computer warfare. One of them, the 591st Signals Unit [591SU], recently faced the Squadron of Operational Information Systems and Cyber Defense [ESIOC] 62.430 “Marensin” of the 118 Mont-de-Marsan air base, during of an exercise called "Cybercrunch", in reference to the matches - generally very hotly contested - of rugby between France and England.

Of the "capture the flag" type, this exercise mobilized Airbus Cybersecurity, which was asked to play the role of the attacker. The French and Royal Air Force teams therefore had to react as quickly as possible to an attack on their systems.

“Throughout this day, we had to monitor a system representing a map and simulating an aerial situation. One attack was identified when the displayed aircraft symbols changed color and multiplied to saturate the display. The goal was to be the first team to diagnose the attack using our cybersurveillance tools, ”explains Colonel Ludovic, commander of the ESIOC.

In this game, the French aviators were the most effective… since for the first edition of this exercise, they won the “Cyber Crunch” trophy.

“The ESIOC personnel have demonstrated that this squadron is performing very well. This exercise, beyond emulating the challenge, confirms the excellence of our cyber defense experts ”, welcomed General Christophe Vilchenon, commander of the air maneuver support brigade [BAAMA] of the French Air Force Command. air forces [CFA].

The Air Force explains that this competition [on which the Royal Air Force has remained silent] aims to "create emulation and strengthen the bond" between the ESIOC and the 591st Signals Unit. But not only because it is also a "real exercise in defensive computer warfare which requires the implementation of all the skills and knowledge required in this area from cyber-surveillance, to incident response. . "

But as who can do more can do less, ESIOC, like its British counterpart, also has the ability to attack.

“To know how to defend, you have to know how to attack. In particular, we are studying how the operating modes are sequenced in order to be able to provide the most effective responses. The partnership with the British is particularly fruitful, because each has its areas of excellence and the enrichment is mutual, ”explained Colonel Ludovic.
